#cuttings

2025-11-13

I don't buy many #plants. I make new ones through #cuttings or (rarely) seeds. This week I divided my most recent purchase, a Zanzibar Gem from a few months ago into four separate plants, and I am very proud of the results.

I took these #cuttings in late summer, but unfortunately did not note what they were from. I would guess they are #Crataegus, but I am surprised by the size of the leaves and the absence of thorns. Something from the edge of the forest/wild hedges, eastern France. Native species are C. monogyna, C. laevigata, C. rhipidophylla etc.

Can it be a crataegus? (More in alt texts. I don't need the exact species because of hybridisations.)

The shoot from above shows hawthorn-like leaves with a reddish-brown bud in the centre. The leaves are remarkably long, up to 5 cm.In late summer, I stuck three branches into the soil of a flower box and they took root extremely quickly. The leaves look like Crataegus, but the shoots do not have any thorns. However, they are too young to have formed side shoots yet.Zoom on one of the leaves.

Plant babies!

I actually have a lot more than shown here. The green ones is a jade and I have forgotten the name of the other ones.

A few years ago a brought one of the white ones and it broke a bunch before I got it home and so I planted the broken bits and now I have 2 more fully grown ones :D

It's wierd how they just break off. They can be dry and fall off but also perfectly watered etc and still want to self propogate.

The willow twigs have taken very well. I hadn't expected catkins so quickly.

Gradually, they will be knitted together to make an arch.

Spring is such an exciting time for plant lovers! I love seeing my plants finally flourish after a dark winter. It gets so dark in Finland during winter I actually had to move the most sensitive plants from windowsill to kitchen under the sink light.

I got many plant losses last year during a thrip invasion but at this point I'm just grateful I finally got rid of them last year. I had to cut my several meters long passion fruit vine down to a stick so I'm super happy to see it flourish again.

Remember to check on your plants often and deal with bugs as early as possible. Throw away the plants that are badly infected - if you take cuttings keep them isolated and shower them frequently. I have most of my plants in water instead of soil so it's easy to give them regular showers just in case.

In Farsi, we call this Khar Zahre (poison of the donkey), I have no idea why. It's Oleander in English and it comes in different colors. We have them everywhere in south of France. Just like in the south of Iran where I was born.

Picked up a broken branch from the street last spring and put it into a pot.

It rooted and this year it's blooming. I really like it.

I want to do the same with the white and the red ones as well.

I just love elderflower bushes. I lile their rustic look, with a bark that immediately lets you think of a gnarly forest filled with fairies, witches and gnomes. They also have really beautiful and delicate flowers that smell amazing. And the best thing is that you can make really tasty syrup of both the flowers and the berries! Such a great plant.
So I really like to try to grow new ones and give them away to friends or just plant them in the wild at places where they could thrive. Unfortunately, I missed the right moment to pot my cuttings last summer, and they all died. But last weekend I remembered that you not only cut make cuttings from new shoots in early summer, but also from older ones during winter. Well, after looking it up again it actually appears to be something you do in the end of fall or beginning of winter, not when spring is about to start and the plants have already started to wake up again. But I decided to give it a try anyways, we'll see how it goes. I'll keep you posted!

This is my first entry! Yeah, baby, yeah!

This post is for those who live in or near Orange County, New York. I live in the town of Montgomery and I am selling a variety of rooted #fig #cuttings, including #red #Lebanese for $10 each and a variety of "Unknown" for $6 each. These unknown varieties are such prolific producers of figs.
The rooted cuttings are in fig-pop bags with thick, good-looking roots and have started growing branches.

NO SHIPPING; sorry.

This is a cutting I replanted next week. I had to trim it a little for the roots to comfortably fit in the soil. I saved the parts I broke off and they started growing roots.

I'm not sure how long I should wait until I plant them.

In front and at the back on the left are two hardwood cuttings of Catalpa, the Indian bean tree.

They are much too small to support the giant leaves of the mature trees but there are green sprouts on both. Whether they can establish is still uncertain but there is some life there at least. The twigs are very light, like balsa. There is practically no substance to them. It will be a slow process I think.

2 willow cuttings with new roots development.
Left one is hardwood & right is softwood.

Other hardwood cuttings have done very well but I was very sceptical about Catalpa, the Indian Bean Tree.

The wood is very lightweight, like balsa, so there is very little substance there. Also, buds break very late. My tree is just starting now.

So I was amazed that all four of the cuttings have tiny green buds. Early days and they may come to nothing but who knows?
