👾 We hear a lot about cybercrime, but what is it exactly? Surprisingly enough, scholars haven't agreed on a definition yet. This also affects how criminals are treated in a court of law. Discover why it's so difficult to discern criminal behaviour online and offline in this article. 🙃

Japan Post, in a shocking revelation, has decided that the future is *digital*—because apparently, regular addresses are just too 20th century for them. 🌐📬 So, now you can get lost in instead of on the streets! 🙃🔄

Ooh, look what I found in the archives!

"On an overcast morning in 1999, William Gibson, father of #cyberpunk and author of the cult-classic novel Neuromancer, stepped into a limousine and set off on a road trip around North America. The limo was rigged with digital cameras, a computer, a television, a stereo, and a cell phone. Generated entirely by this four-wheeled media machine, No Maps for These Territories is both an account of Gibson’s life and work and a commentary on the world outside the car windows. Here, the man who coined the word #cyberspace offers a unique perspective on Western culture at the edge of the new millennium, and in the throes of convulsive, tech – driven change."

The front of the dvd box for the documentary "No maps for these territories". The top 2 3rds shows a black rectangle containing a lo-res/pixelized/glitchy portrait of William Gibson in dark grey tones. Below that a small text says "a film by Mark Neale". The main title takes up the bottom 3rd in a stylized angular font with strange kerning. Below that, in small print, is the text "With William Gibson, Jack Womack, Bruce Sterling and William Burroughs. Music by Tomandandy, U2, Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. Selected readings by William Gibson and Jack Womack"

sadly, no mention of #Mastodon in this post, but I suppose as far as social media goes, Mastodon itself is not super secure. It is better than #Facebook or the birdsite, and maybe there are other platforms on the #Fediverse that are more secure than #Mastodon. Security aside though, I am rather disappointed that they didn’t mention decentralized social media, or other forms of decentralization for services on the #Internet.

Allow me to elaborate:

Russland same.

Text from article(edited for length):
Today everything from our water/power/sewer utilities to our cellular telephone systems... to our nuclear weaponry and military services runs on digital ones and zeros that flow through cyberspace.

Rather than the next war starting with a flash from a nuclear explosion over New York or Moscow or Beijing, it’s more likely that today the first step would be multiple major cities browning out as the electrical grid is fried the way the United States and Israel took out Iran’s centrifuges a decade ago with the Stuxnet worm.

Electronically force open a few big dams to kill millions with flooding, melt down a dozen nuclear reactors creating mass panic and death, and shut down communications systems for first responders: The country would be thrown into a chaos not unlike the firebombing of Dresden or Tokyo in 1944...

With no power, no telecommunications, and no water, American cities would descend into chaos in days and become unlivable hellscapes within a week; drain the big banks and vanish their depositors’ records, and Putin has hit our nation at all levels from the top government/corporate to infrastructure to the individual and personal.

The risk/reward calculation for cyberwar is so much better than for nuclear war that it’s probable nuclear warfare has become an anachronism and cyberwar is the real new military frontier.

And Trump and Hegseth just eliminated most of our defenses against Russia doing this to us.

A group of five anthropomorphic characters in futuristic, form-fitting suits inspired by the Tron (Legacy) aesthetic, standing in a digital, neon-lit environment. The central figure is a muscular tiger with orange accents on his black suit, exuding confidence and leadership. To his right, a tall black and purple dragon holds two bright disks, a blue and an orange one. To his left, a black wolf with blue accents carries a glowing blue disc. In the background, on the left a red-marked wolf and one the right side, a white-furred canine ride sleek with his tongue out, riding glowing light cycles. The environment is a cybernetic grid with a dark teal sky, filled with faint digital patterns, evoking a high-tech, sci-fi atmosphere.

I don't think that the 48.3% of Americans who voted against trumpists last year deserve a "" and I remain inspired by and in solidarity with many American artists, scientists, public workers... who are the first to suffer under the current situation.
That said, Europe needs data security and protection from GAFAM hegemony in
Perhaps Americans themselves are safer and more free with etc.

#TIL that even though William Gibson is often credited for inventing the term "cyberspace" for his 1984 cyberpunk novel "Neuromancer", the first documented use of the term, predating Gibson's book by a decade & a half, is by Danish artist Susanne Ussing for this "study in cybernetics & open systems which adapt when influenced" 👉 susanneussing.dk/arkivet-proje
