A4. The first bike I had for touring purposes was a Dawes Galaxy. For its time it was and probably still is the epitome of a touring bike, although no longer in production.
The first time I rode it after setting it up, I was very underwhelmed at how it felt to ride. But then I took it on my first tour, with two panniers on the rear and a bag on the handlebars... It was transformed. The ride changed and it felt perfect for the job. The designers clearly knew what they were doing. I guess that's why the Galaxy stayed in production for as long as it did until it eventually fell victim to fashion.

The last miles to the campsite were tough, all in unrelenting headwinds. I shouted poems and songs to keep me going until finally, on the edge of a cliff, I made it. A couple with a caravan joined me by my pitch, offered me dinner, offered me stories of Mull and Iona, and a hot water bottle as the evening weather raged on and battered my tent.

A year to the day I was cycling from one side of Mull to the other. The previous evening, I had changed my booking with the Caledonian Sleeper to an earlier date. I knew it was the right choice but it was also a difficult choice. My body was shutting down.

A year to the day I left Islay for a night in Jura. I was due to catch a ferry the following day, but first a crossing of Islay. It was sunny, warm, and windless. I was giddy from the sun, the curlews, the skylarks, and the lapwings.
The map told me I could reach Jura in a couple of hours. It took me nearly the whole day of stopping, of delighting, or laughing, of basking in the joy of it all.
The atmosphere turned. Folks departed after the whisky festival, and I remained alone.

I'm a big fan of #Ortlieb products, particularly the panniers. I had missed that there is a new locking device, the QL2-Lock, available for bags with the Quick-Lock2 system.
I'm going to give it a try. Does anyone have experience of using them?
