#StandingStoneSunday mit einem der Hügelgräber (Hünengrab) bei Wacken/Vaale.
#DailyMegalith

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Ollie at Carnasserie standing stones, #Kilmartin #ArgyllandBute #Scotland (2012)

A white man with a beard leaning against a standing stone. The stone is at quite an angle. Beyond is a second stone, and in the background, hills. The sky is blue with white clouds, the sun is shining.

Ollie at Lundin Links #Fife #Scotland (2017)

Three very large standing stones. They're on a golf course so the grass is very short. Blue sky, sunshine. A white man in a straw hat is sitting at the foot of the middle stone.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Auchencar #IsleofArran #Scotland (2012)
One of a pair (the other is fallen, you can just see it in the grass), red sandstone. 5m tall.

A good dramatic sky - blue showing through the clouds, a hill in sunshine, and in the foreground a very tall pointy standing stone also in sunshine. green grass, distant sheep.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Iscoed (or Is-coed) standng stone aka Maen Llwyd nr #Ferryside #Carmarthenshire #Wales (2023)
with Susan, Mark, and Ollie (yesterday)

a chunky standongstone in a green field on a sunny day. In the distance you can just see a partially ruined mansion houseOllie reaching up to touch the top of the stone, which must be about 7.5 feet tall. It's very chunky.L-R a standing stone; Susan (a blonde white woman in a red coat); Mark (a tall white man in a dark jacket and a hat); and Ollie (a bearded white man in a hat and an orange jacket). It's a selfie, I took it, you can see the top of my head.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Ardgroom stone circle, #BearaPeninsula #CountyCork #RepublicofIreland (2008) That's Bantry Bay in the distance.

The arc of a stone circle. Six upright, pointed stones (well one of them's a bit stumpier) in a green space, with gorse and reeds and the distant hint of ocean. The sky is grey but the image is quite bright.

#TombTuesday #DailyMegalith Tomb 7, Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery #CountySligo #RepublicofIreland (2015)
Contains a small goblin (Tilly) and you can see Maeve's Cairn on the hill in the distance.

A small dolmen-style burial chamber with a chunky capstone and four orthostats. A small child (she was nine, I think) stands inside the chamber. You can see the circle of kerb of low stones that surrounds the burial chamber. Blue sky, white clouds, green grass.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Here's Ollie at the Stones of Stenness #Orkney #Scotland (2018)

A white man in shorts and a jacket, wearing a straw hat, leans against a standing stone, stretching his arms up as high as he can. He reaches about a third of the way up. The stone is narrower at the bottom and widens towards the top, which is steeply angled. Other, shorter stones are visible in the distance. The sky is very blue, and the sun is shining.

#TombTuesday #DailyMegalith Quoyness chambered tomb, #Sanday #Orkney #Scotland (2018)

The inner chamber is 4m high and six smaller chambers lead off from it. The passageway is partly open now but you still have to crawl a fair distance.

I really love chambered tombs.

The outside of the tomb. The entrance passage is now partly open. It's quite tidy looking drystone walling, set in green grass. Blue sky, sunshine. A gravel path leads towards the passage. The passage way is long and low. Light comes in through the tiny gated entrance.Inside the central chamber with the low dark entrance of one of the side chambers visible. It's light because there's a (modern) skylight in the roof.B&W shot of a slightly bedraggled white woman inside the central chamber. (It's me!)

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith The Beorgs of Housetter stones are gloriously pink and deliciously covered in lichen. #Shetland #Scotland (2018)

#LichenSubscribe #Lichenstodon

A pink and lichenous standing stone in a boggy grassy space with low hills behind. Being Shetland, it's wild and empty (although just off the road, which is not in the picture), a treeless place. The sun is shining but the sky is pretty grey.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Moel Goedog 7, one of multiple stones in the hills above #Harlech #Gwyned #Wales (2019)
This is the tallest of them, at 2.2m.

A tall, broad standing stone with an uneven top. It stands in a field where the crop has been harvested. Beyond it there's a drystone wall, a five bar gate, a road, another wall and in the distance hills growing higher. There's a hint of blue in the cloudy sky.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Castle Fraser or Balkorgar stone circle on a very dreich day. Nr #Inverurie #Aberdeenshire #Scotland (2021)

#RecumbentStoneCircle

A chunky recumbent stone and two flankers, very lichenous. A man in a navy blue waterproof stands beside the furthest flanker. He has his hood up. The sky is uniformly grey.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Tyrebagger stone circle (2021) is a very fine recumbent stone circle #Dyce #Aberdeen #Aberdeenshire #Scotland

The circle is complete (very unusual) and the recumbent stone is 24 tons of grey granite, the orthostats are red granite. There are eleven stones altogether.

A fine blustery day, blue sky and scudding white clouds. To the left of the picture a beech tree, with the stones of a circle leading away from it. In the foreground the recumbent stone with its flankers, and in the distance the dark trees of a sitka plantation.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Old Keig recumbent stone circle, nr #Alford #Aberdeenshire #Scotland (2021)

The recumbent, 53 tons of sillimanite gneiss, is the largest known. It's 4.9m x 2.1m x 2m and was brought from about 10km away. This is one of my favourite sites, it's beautiful, impressive, and there are some really great trees.

The very large recumbent stone and two flankers of an RSC, with a view acorss the valley to distant hills. There are grey clouds with the sun breaking through.

#StandingStoneSunday #DailyMegalith Balquhain recumbent stone circle nr #Inverurie #Aberdeenshire #Scotland (2021) plus #pylons and a #windturbine

The outlier (in the foreground) is 3m of white quartz. The other stones include granite, basalt and quartzite.

Blue sky with quite a lot of high pale cloud. The sun is shining, it's late afternoon, autumn. A harvested field leads up to a wind turbine. The circle stands in an area of rough grass in a field of... some sort of low-growing green crop. A tall, pointed standing stone at the front, and lower stones behind including a 3.8m recumbent with a pointy flanker. Originally twelve stones, four standing, four falling, four missing.

#TombTuesday #DailyMegalith the Allée couverte de Bilgroix (aka dolmen de Pointe de Bilgroix) is very much a bit of #urbanprehistory (or suburban I guess) in #Bilgroix #Arzon #Morbihan #Brittany #France (2022)

A beautiful sunny day. The sky is blue with wispy clouds, the sun is shining. A burial chamber with drystone walling and quite a lot of gorse growing on it. It looks kind of slumped - the mound has been removed. Youc an see one of the capstones within the passage. Behind it there are some good pine trees, Scots pine I think (or French equivalent) and on either side of the picture, the roofs of houses. The house on the right also has windows visible. You can just see the sea, too, on the horizon.

The very lovely #Cothiemuir Wood recumbent stone circle, aka the Devil's Hoofmarks nr #Alford #Aberdeenshire #Scotland (2021)

There's a natural burial ground nearby and if it wasn't a really really long way from where I live I'd quite like to be buried there.

A clearing in a pine plantation. The sky is blue and sunlight falls on the moss and bracken in the foreground. There's a standing stone, about three feet high, and then in the shadowed distance, a recumbent stone, around fourteen feet long, and two upright flanking stones, both of which are about nine feet tall. It's rather magical.
