Rebecca's Sprite (Archibasis rebeccae) spotted in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Singapore on 16 June 2025. Spotted it fluttering in foliage at the side of the trail, and I had a lot of trouble getting into positions to get shots. After posting it on iNaturalist, it was IDed as Rebecca's Sprite, a rare and endangered species. So, good that I decided to get shots. :-)

A Clearwing Gem (Libellago hyalina) spotted at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park, Singapore on 29 Jan 2025. It was perched above head level in the shade, so fortunate to see this seldom seen damselfly.

Gems are a family of local damselflies, some with brightly coloured bodies, with wings that are longer than its stout abdomen.

After hours of (slowly) chasing blue damselflies around the garden before finally getting close with my camera - I saw another! A green, female Banded Demoiselle - Calopteryx splendens. Cue yet more careful, slow approaches whenever she landed on a leaf...

Close-up of head, legs and thorax of an iridescent, metallic green damselfly - bulbous black eyes gleaming in the sunshine - perched on a rose leaf with bristled, black legs.Wider shot of that same damselfly, showing the folded, translucent, metallic green-veined wings partly covering the long abdomen.

A male Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopterix virgo). At 45mm long, this is (along with the Banded Demoiselle) one of the UK’s two largest Damselfly species, and with its metallic body colour it is also a striking one that lives up to its name. Photographed at Upton Warren in Worcestershire in May.

Photo of a male Beautiful Demoiselle perched on a leaf, viewed side on and a little from above. He is facing towards the left of the image, his head near the bottom left corner and the tip of abdomen or tail, which is raised up, near the top right corner. His head, thorax and abdomen are a metallic blue-green colour, as are the veins in his long wings (which are held back, along the length of the body, almost reaching the tip of the abdomen); the cells of his wings, his large compound eyes, his spiny legs and the claspers at the tip of his abdomen are black.

Apologies for the complete lack of bugs lately - I was away. Frequently taking photos of ruins - and of bugs, of course. Here, have a damselfly! A male Calopteryx splendens (I think), west London...

Metallic, iridescent, intense dark blue damselfly perched on a rose leaf on bristled black legs, with wings - orange-rooted, metallic blue veins and near-black spots taking up a good half of their area - folded above a long, raised abdomen.

Another of the amazing damselfly shots at the local pond.
I went again yesterday but they've all vanished, the small window for breeding came and went

I wasn't sure what I was watching here and with help from the Carolina Wildlife Identification and Appreciation Forum I learned that these are damselflies (Orange Bluet) egg-laying after mating.

The circle of life. A mating pair of Variable Damselflies (Coenagrion pulchellum), at RSPB Ham Wall in Somerset at the beginning of this month, in the ‘wheel’ or ‘heart’ formation, which is unique to Dragonflies and Damselflies.

A photo of a pair of Variable Damselflies (Coenagrion pulchellum), perched and hanging vertically on the side of a broad green Reed leaf while mating. The male is uppermost, with his long tail - the claspers on the end of which are holding the female just behind the top of her head - arched upward. The female in turn has her tail curled round beneath and out in front of her, connecting to the underside of the male’s abdomen at the point where it joins his thorax. The male has ‘accessory genitalia’ in that location, to which he will have transferred sperm from near the tip of his tail. These Damselflies are primarily sky-blue in colour, with some greenish areas on the underside of the female’s tail, and with black markings on both sexes. They have two pairs of long, slim wings, which are clear but with a network of black veins dividing them into cells; each wing has one black cell near the tip.

A Common Flashwing (Vestalis amethystina) spotted at the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Singapore on 1 Jan 2025. A common damselfly and one of the larger ones. If you angle the flash just right when taking a shot, you can get a lovely glittering pattern on its wings.
