This is a watercolor swatch of Daniel Smith Rose of Ultramarine and Lunar Violet pushed to reveal their granulation. The Rose of Ultramarine leaves a distinct pink edging as it's watered down with bursts of blue splitting out with a few spots of reddish purple masstone. The lunar violet granulates very gritty and dark and hazy purple. This watercolor swatch is made using Schmincke Wild Purple and Shadow Grey. The wild purple masstone is more red than purple and the water pushes it to granulate into bursts of vibrant bright pink and grittier blue. With more water, the colors are just a lighter value. The shadow grey is a smokey blue and granulates similar to the blue in the wild purple; however it leaves a black edge.

The Peacock butterfly , in watercolour

The primary food plants of European peacock larvae are stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), hop (Humulus lupulus), and the small nettle (Urtica urens).

The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, willows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also use tree sap and rotten fruits.

Slowly getting back into aquarelle painting again.
Two evenings ago I painted this wintery scene based on a photograph I took in #Bodø just under 3 years ago, around 9 in the morning.
Quite satisfied with how it turned out, especially the sun coming up from behind the mountains, though less so with the recognisability of the mountains.

Paper: 230 grams A5 paper from Søstrene Grene, 100% paper.
Paint: a mix of Panduro Watercolour Set Basic, Van Gogh Water Colour, Daniel Smith Hansa Yellow Light, and some white gouache.

An aquarelle painting of a winter scene; snow-covered mountains in the distance to the right, and a burning yellow, orange, and pink sunrise to the left. In front of that are distant trees and city lights, and more snow in the foreground.
The sky is a mix of dark blues, purples, orange and pinks.

A portrait of a group of people, the leftmost of which is Elizabeth Puffer Smith, wife of Daniel Smith, who was the founder of the village of Mishicot.

This obituary of Elizabeth was published in the Manitowoc Pilot on April 23, 1880:

“Gone to Rest”

We’re sorry to be obliged to announce the death of another old resident of the county. Mrs. Daniel Smith of Mishicott, died yesterday forenoon after weeks of wasting sickness. She had just reached the ripe old age of four score years when death summoned her to join her beloved companion of former years, whose ashes have for many years rested beneath the sod, and obeyed the summon willingly, passing beyond the Dark River with a smile upon her aged face that will remain until dissolution has performed its effacing task.

It will be impossible for us to give anywhere near as full an obituary notice as we would like but that sad duty will perhaps be performed by someone of the many who are personal friends and acquaintances of the venerable deceased, whose knowledge of her life and sorrow over her death will give to their memorial sketch both verity and pathos.

Mrs Smith was a typical Yankee woman strong and fearless, tender and tireless -and although for years past old age has not prevented her from going about and relieve distress and soften sorrow, people have not yet forgotten that while in health she never refused to respond to any call for assistance. She was, in reality, not only one of the pioneers of the county but one of the pioneers of the West, having come here nearly fifty years ago with her husband Daniel Smith, (in after years “Uncle Dan”) when the whole country between Lake Michigan and the Fox River was an unbroken, primeval forest; when Indians and wild animals were numerous. But none of the dangers of the frontier or the dense and pathless woods kept her from mounting her pony and going to the relief of the sick or unfortunate. She leaves several sons and daughters, who are scattered far and near but who have been notified by telegraph of her death. Her funeral will probably take place on Thursday.

Two photos of the gravestone for Daniel Smith, pioneer founder of the Village of Mishicot. One photo was published in the Manitowoc County Reporter on January 30, 1980.

Obituary for Daniel Smith published in the Manitowoc Pilot:

Died at his residence in the town of Mishicot, on Thursday. Mr. Daniel Smith was aged 57 years.

The deceased was born in Pennsylvania in 1801 and emigrated to Marion, Wayne County, N. Y. in 1808 where he resided till 1820. From Marion he removed to Rochester, and from that city, in 1845, (1844) he came to Two Rivers, then almost a wilderness where he resided until a short time. Recently he has purchased a large tract of land in the town of Mischicott, to which he removed. He commenced making substantial improvements, and long before his disease had the satisfaction of finding himself a citizen of a neat and flourishing village grown into prosperity under his special care and influence.

Mr. Smith was a man who pursed life along the unosttehtatious paths of useful and practical enterprise. And has left behind him evidences of accomplished effort which will be of lasting benefit, and prove a worthy example to those who remain and come after. He was justly regarded as one of the most prominent citizens of our county — not from his desire to obtain popular favor, nor for his ambition in the common strife for distinguished honors—but because he was an early citizen, whose honorable and upright conduct distinguished him from the majority of those who seek the western country as mere adventures in pursuit of worldly gains. He possessed superior business qualifications, a clear judgment and an honest heart.

His comfortable mansion was the home of hospitality— the poor and distressed were the objects of his generous sympathy and to his friends he was faithful and true.

The loss of such a man to our community is deeply to be lamented, but his sudden and somewhat unexpected decease brings a desolation to the “home circle” Which can only be realized by her whose deep sorrow will be mitigated by the grateful recollection of unremitting kindness, through long, long years and by the children who, while they live, will cherish the memory of a kind, indulgent father, whom they loved and honored.

Monument to the Late Daniel Smith Article — Published in the Manitowoc Pilot on March 29, 1860:

We had the opportunity on Friday last of inspecting the splendid monument erected at Michicott, to the memory of the late Daniel Smith by his widow and the children of the deceased. The monument is a solid column of pure marble, resting upon a base composed of square blocks, the largest of which is about four feet square by one foot thick. Upon on of these blocks, is inscribed, in large letters the family name. Upon one side of the column is the following inscription:

DANIEL SMITH BORN APRIL 15, 1801 DIED OCTOBER 2,1858. Inserted in a beautiful sculptured wreath is the passage of scripture:

“Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that is peace”

Between the base and the capital are also the names, births and ages of three daughters, two of whom rest by his side and one in the cemetery at Buffalo.

Upon the upper part of the columns a scroll surrounded by a wreath and surrounding it is an urn upon which is a wreath. The height is 14 feet and its weight of the whole structure is 44 tons. It is erected in the burial place belonging to the estate, upon an elevated piece of ground overlooking the river and the beautiful scenery surrounding the village. It is a most fitting tribute of love and respect and marks the resting place of a good man.

I'm fanboy enough to admit that I even got one of his signature colors. But that was actually pretty confusing this time. I always forget that his warm grey actually is a grey and not a black. And you just cant get dark values out of it.

So after a weird first try for the second wash I went back on mixing a more blackish grey with french ultramarine and burnt sienna which kind of saved this painting. 😄

A new adventure painting, from our first visit to Muir Woods, a truly magical redwood forest just north of San Francisco. We were there in the late afternoon, and found it low in crowds and high in light rays 😍

A watercolor painting on toned gray paper of a redwood grove with sunlight rays bursting from behind one central tree trunk. Green foliage fills the background, and a set of stairs curves up from the bottom towards the right, beside a National Park stamp from Muir Woods with the visit date of April 19, 2024 in green ink.

I wanna put focus on the green color I used. As in one of the earlier paintings it's green apatite genuine by Daniel Smith. I'm really amazed how many different objects you can pull off with it.

Many people say that it's difficult to mix it with other colors, which is technically correct. But it works very well with any kind of lemon yellow. So you can get those beautiful greens glistening in the sun.

WIP
Working on this on my Wednesday live streams on twitch. Started with the first shadow layer on the big brass statue. It will get a lot darker over time. Size ca Din A3, so I will work quite some time on it. Will be done with watercolors only (with the exception of a white for highlights).

Image is a double page. We see a massive statue (made of brass) on the left page. The statue shows (probably) Buddha and small boy right of him and a girl left of him.
There are three chinese lanterns, one in the upper left area above the statue and two hanging on a big wooden archway on the right page. Also on the archway are fragments of fabric, probably from a flag or something similar. We see a small candle holder in the bottom area. In the lower right area stands a warrior with a sword on his back. He is wearing traditional asian clothing and has very long hair, which he wears in a braid.
I've colored the warrior already in black/ grey and a muted red. At the moment I am working on the big brass statue, which I have done a ground layer and at the moment I am working on the first shadow layer. (will be probably around 4 layers in the end)
