"Olympos" war ein ReRead. Ich habe es im Laufe der Jahre bereits einmal gelesen und mindestens 7x als Dieser Teil der gefällt mir nicht ganz so gut wie der erste, "Ilium", der zu meinen allerliebsten Büchern überhaupt zählt. Natürlich ist "Olympos" trotzdem sehr gut!
Weil ich das Buch nicht immer mit mir herumschleppen wollte, kaufte ich mir ausnahmsweise das .

#ScribesAndMakers 10.22 — What’s your favorite horror novel?

Don't make me choose! I love horror.

It's a toss-up between these two beauties. Read Drood, seriously.

I'll leave you with this: "Drood" is a novel that delves into the last five years of Charles Dickens' life, focusing on his obsession with a figure named Drood. The novel is narrated by Wilkie Collins, Dickens' friend and fellow author, and it intertwines Dickens' personal and literary struggles with his obsession. The narrative is complex, blending fiction with biographical facts and exploring themes of obsession, jealousy, and the darker aspects of human nature. The book has been praised for its imaginative storytelling and Simmons' ability to weave historical details into a compelling narrative.

On my desk are pumpkins and mushrooms, all in green, orange, and pink shades. Resting on the desktop is a pair of books. One is Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with an orange Barnes and Nobles' Classics cover, with art of the human skull on it. Next to it is Drood from Dan Simmons. On the cover is the silhouette back of a dark figure with a top hat and coat.

I've been putting together paperbacks of the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, mostly buying second hand as I spot them. At this point I will be disappointed if the edition I find of the final one, The Rise of Endymion, matches any of the other covers. 📚

If you can't get them all matching, the next best thing is to make sure none of them match.

Three paperback books laid out on a grey fleece throw.

They are Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion and Endymion by Dan Simmons, all part of the series called the Hyperion Cantos. None of the editions have matching covers.

This cover art for Hyperion by Dan Simmons is an evocative and surreal blend of science fiction and mythology.

At the forefront, a colossal winged statue dominates the scene. Its wings spread wide, majestic yet foreboding.

In the background, a massive crystalline entity looms, its jagged body glistening like ice or glass blades. It has an almost celestial form, outstretched arms of sharp spikes reaching toward the sky, while fiery streaks—possibly missiles or energy blasts—cut through the heavens. This represents the Shrike, the enigmatic, terrifying being central to Hyperion, a creature of both divine mystery and relentless horror.

Below, a tall-masted ship rests on grassland, its sails unfurled yet seemingly caught in a moment of stillness. It juxtaposes futuristic and ancient imagery, emphasizing the novel’s blend of technology and classical themes. Nearby, a group of shadowy travelers stands silhouetted, seemingly gazing at the vast, surreal landscape before them—a metaphor for the pilgrimage that lies at the heart of the story.

Mountains rise in the background beneath a twilight sky, while a gnarled tree crackles with lightning, further enhancing the sense of wonder and danger. This cover masterfully embodies Hyperion’s epic scope—a tale of myths reborn, worlds colliding, and destiny unfolding.

I really hated ILIUM, but I've read the first 200 pages of OLYMPOS and this is slightly better. There is SOME coherence to the storytelling. But ultimately Dan Simmons has written a literary pastiche that means nothing. My working theory is that Dan Simmons lost his mind not long after the Endymion books. Because his talent was almost completely absent after that. Though we shall see where he's at when I eventually get to THE TERROR.

There are many embarrassing qualities about Dan Simmons's work after THE RISE OF ENDYMION. This is really a reading journey I cannot recommend. Lots of awful books. It's extremely soul-crushing, given how brilliant many of those early volumes were. But these feeble efforts at PENTHOUSE LETERS-style passages are especially sad and egregious.

As of this morning, I've read the six books that Dan Simmons published after THE FALL OF ENDYMION (a truly great novel) . And, with the exception of A WINTER HAUNTING, the dude was just gone, his creative talents atrophied. You read this shit and he's almost a completely different person. A total hack in some cases. The Joe Kurtz trilogy is a pale imitation of Richard Stark. The less said about THE CROOK FACTORY and DARWIN'S BLADE, the better. Ugh. What happened here?

While I haven't yet read ILIUM or OLYMPOS (and I will), by my reckoning, the decline of Dan Simmons as a sui generis talent seemed to happen after he finished THE RISE OF ENDYMION. The three novels that followed were awful or just okay. Simmons's introductions to WORLDS ENOUGH & TIME are wildly arrogant and condescending. Perhaps he was bitter because his well had run dry. It truly is sad what happened to him. He wrote too many books too fast. And his work suffered.

I haven't yet read FLASHBACK (and I'm not looking forward to it), but DARWIN'S BLADE is surely right down there as Dan Simmons at his worst. Wretched dialogue, hopelessly thin characters. And this after THE CROOK FACTORY, which dropped off significantly after the first 100 pages and is also largely tedious. I honestly think that the two brilliant Endymion books took his entire brain and he had nothing left for a few years. Writers, be careful with your creative energies!

@vantablue

Yes, I think you should. If you like his style, you can read “Children of the Night” afterwards. The latter is partly based on “Summer of Night” and also features vampires. If “Children of the Night” doesn't suit your taste either, maybe the whole vampire theme really isn't for you. But that would be okay too.

Listened to this as I read the end of Part 1 of The Rise of Endymion. Definitely a good listen for science fiction, especially if uneasy, meditative or horror oriented.
