Oh ffs, @mozilla! This "Welcome back" pop-up coming up after not using Firefox for a while is not having the effect you hope it has.
All I see is a dark pattern to get me to accidentally change my default browser.
Notice how there is not a "No thanks" button? You have to X out or deselect those options manually.

I wonder if this is new, macOS only or already changed. I searched for that pop up and found only a different variation still with a "Not now" button - which isn't great but a bit better.

Schon jetzt, da ich dies schreibe, wüsste ich nicht mehr, wie ich den Weg dahin jemand Fremdem erklären sollte. Ich verliere bei der Suche wertvolle Lebensviertelstunden und am Ende womöglich die Lust, den Vertrag fortzusetzen. Toll wäre ein per Standardoberfläche eingeblendetes Widget "Einstellungen".

This morning I was "welcomed" by the SMS from my cellular operator about increasing costs for my tariff plan — since 1st January of 2026 I'll pay 845 ₽ (≈ 8.5 $) instead of 750 ₽ (≈ 7.5 $).

Obviously I don't want to pay more — why I even should pay so much for shitty network, which shuts down each time when military drones enter aerial space of Leningradskaya oblast (even the connection to the selfhosted server in the same city is not working, as @livefish told me), and which connectivity to the other networks is broken too — "thanks" to the some "three-letter agencies" (I even unable to update my timeline from mastodon.bsd.cafe without … ughm … using some special techniques — can't speak freely because writing about how to setup network services to avoid these blocks are illegal here)?

Thusly, I decided to login to the cellular operator's site and search for a cheaper plan. I found it, but — damn there are A LOT of dark patterns here!

First, I select a cheapest plan with enough traffic limits (25 Gb per month) which costs 700 ₽ (≈ 7 $). On the next screen it suddenly started to cost 720 ₽ (≈ 7.2 $). Why? Because the additional fee for unlimited use of ТамТам messenger was preselected, lol :drgn_knife_angry: . Possibly, you don't hear about ТамТам because it is dead for now — all cool stateists using new messenger Max, lol.

Second, I decided to change the amount of prepaid minutes and Gb to get more Gb. And there is a funniest dark pattern:

I'm increasing the amount of prepaid minutes — the overall price increases too, as it should be.

I'm decreasing the amount of minutes — the overall price … INCREASES again! :drgn_lol_nervous: (see the attached video on the second toot)

When I'm decreasing amount of minutes, the free unlimited access to messengers become paid unlimited access — and the resulting price become higher, lmao.

I say this as a power user who finds them useful when scoped or when users are aware how they work. In their current form they're just a hyperoptomized sociotechnical loop that will convince users to share data that will be used against them in the future.

I encountered what I think is a brand-new form of gas-station fuckery today. A #darkpattern in real life.

In the station's (bog-standard) self-service pay-at-the-pump system, you stick in a credit card, then pull out the fuel nozzle and push a button for fuel grade. Normally, none has been selected at this point.

Today, however, the "ultra" grade button was initially lit (at $1/gallon more than "regular"). Naturally, I pressed the "regular" button.

Nothing happened.

I pressed it about 15 times over the next 10 seconds before the pump consented to select the cheaper fuel grade. I even considered going "what the hell, just buy the higher-grade fuel."

I'm not 100% convinced this wasn't some one-off hardware fault, but it's awfully suspicious. And I think I am permanently done with this station.

Anyone else seen this for themselves?
