Lilbits: A 60 Hz E Ink monitor, Lenovo’s next gaming tablet, and Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders

When Nintendo introduces the Switch 2 earlier this month the company said it would go up for pre-order on April 9th. Two days later the company put those plans on hold while it tried to gauge the impact of global tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Now Nintendo says its next game console will go up for pre-order on April 24th. It’s still expected to ship June 5th and sell for $450, […]

Lilbits: 8 years of updates for (some) Android phones, Dasung’s 60 Hz E Ink display is going global, and more

A handful of Android smartphone makers have committed to offering major OS and security updates for at least seven years after the launch of a new phone. Soon we could see phones with up to eight years of guaranteed updates.

Qualcomm has announced it’s partnered with Google to begin supporting flagship and upper mid-range processors for that long by delivering OS, kernel, and security […]

If you own a #Dasung #Paperlike Color monitor, there is one game that you absolutely have to play on it: #SlayThePrincess.

The cool thing about this game is that the monitor's dithering in the non-text modes actually _adds_ to the game's atmosphere.

After using the #BooxMira #EInk monitor for a few days, I must say, the "Presentation Mode" is a killer feature - a feature that I miss a lot on the #Dasung #Paperlike Color.

While "Presentation Mode" makes the screen very slow, image quality is vastly improved, and for reading things I strongly prefer image quality over refresh speed.

I now have both, a #Boox #Mira (the small one), and a #Dasung #Paperlike Color (Revolutionary). I think I can do an initial comparison of both #EInk monitors:
Ghosting is better on the Dasung screen. I barely ever need to do a manual refresh on it, while I often need to do that on the Boox display.
The text rendering is good on both, but on the Dasung it needs some extra setup (like disabling Anti-Aliasing and sticking to the 8 supported colours).
Overall image quality is better on the Boox.

The manual for the #Dasung #Paperlike #EInk monitors mentions that the Dark Knight version has the option to switch to a lower resolution of 1600x900 by pressing the (C) and (-) buttons. I just tried this on the Paperlike Color (Revolutionary), but sadly it seems it does not support this feature.

I just got a second-hand #BooxMira #EInk display. While I am using the #Dasung #Paperlike Color for work, I also want an e-Ink screen for my spare-time PC, where I don't have the space for a full-sized second monitor. The Boox Mira should fit nicely though, especially in portrait.

Dasung launches a 10.3 inch portable E Ink monitor with a 60 Hz refresh rate

Dasung is a Chinese company that makes E Ink tablets, monitors, and category-defying devices like the Dasung Link. Recently the company has been taking aim at one of the shortcomings of E Ink displays: low screen refresh rates.

Now the company has unveiled a portable monitor with an E Ink display that supports refresh rates as high as 60 Hz, allowing you to view full-motion graphics. There […]

I have decided to write a long-form review about the #Dasung #Paperlike Color #EInk monitor in my blog.

I will probably publish it before my current WIP blog post, simply because it is way easier to write.

2025-01-22

I just noticed that the claim of 4096 colours is not only on Reddit: The #Dasung #Paperlike Color shop page (shop.dasung.com/products/dasun) mentions that it uses a Kaleido 3 #EInk display: eink.com/brand/detail/Kaleido3

So, I wonder if the dithering is actually normal for Kaleido 3 E-Ink devices, or if it maybe is only needed in order to achive high refresh rates?

2025-01-22

In case you are wondering how many colours the #Dasung #Paperlike Color #EInk display can display, the answer seems to be 8. If my eyes don't deceive me, everything that is not white, black, red, green, blue, magenta, cyan or yellow is dithered. That would mean 3 bits per pixel.

I saw a claim (iirc on Reddit) that it has 4098 colours, and I guess this can be argued somehow by grouping 4 pixels together, but if you want the "vibrant" colours advertised by Dasung, you should settle for those 8.

Photo of a colour test pattern on a Dasung Paperlike Color Revolutionary screen. There seems to be 3 bits (8 colours) per pixel.

I was about to complain that my new #Dasung #Paperlike Color (Revolutionary) doesn't work on my #Linux PC, but it turned out to just be a bad HDMI cable. After switching cables it started working fine on my desktop.

Sadly I did not (yet?) manage to get it working on my #MNTReform with the #BananaPi #CM4 SoM. Trying to enable HDMI-out with the screen's native resolution/timings just gives a "failed to set parameters" error from wlr-randr, but HDMI-out on that SoM is known to be problematic.
