@samuelpepys Lately I'm reading #DavidGrann's excellent book #TheWager and you pop up there often, Sam. For a guy who died in 1703 you're quite busy.

Listening to audiobook KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: THE OSAGE MURDERS AND THE BIRTH OF THE FBI (2017) - David Grann, with narration by Will Patton, Ann Marie Lee, and Danny Campbell

Promotional cover art for audiobook Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Grann.

The main focus is a photo of the shadowed face of Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, shown in quarter-profile with an intense expression. This fills the left half and has a solid black background. It seems illuminated in oranges & reds, as though from a fire.

The right half shows a smaller photo of Robert De Niro as William King Hale and Lily Gladstone as Mollie Burkhart, shown in an outdoor scene as they watch a grass fire. Hale wears a brown vest and light-colored long-sleeved shirt, while Mollie wears a traditional Osage blanket over her shoulders.

Above this photo is the author's name in large red block letters. Text "Now a major motion picture" appears at top in tiny white block letters.

Below this photo is the title in large white block letters, followed by the subtitle in small red letters.

The right border shows what looks like white paper and a rated left edge stained by a black liquid which may represent oil, or ink.

Cover art for audiobook "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder" by David Grann.

The cover shows a portion of an oil painting by English marine painter Peter Monamy, titled "Ships in Distress in a Storm", c.1720–30, which depicts a sailing ship buffeted at an angle by crashing waves.

A description:
"This scene of a storm at sea follows the Dutch tradition of such pictures. Although disaster seems inevitable, the clearing blue sky offers hope. It does not necessarily relate to an actual event, though for contemporary viewers it may have brought to mind the ‘Great Storm’ of 1703 which wrecked many ships at sea."

All cover text is in white font, predominantly in serif block letters. The subtitle has words "A tale of" and "and" in a mixed-case script font.

Header text reads (in mixed-case): #1 New York Times bestselling author of "Killers of the Flower Moon"

Footer text reads: "Read by Dion Graham with a note and acknowledgments read by the author"

If you’ve seen Killers of the Flower Moon and thought the story was dark, wait until you read the book.

The story Grann tells is a thousand times darker.

I felt bored watching Killers of the flower moon, I even went to see with my smartphone's flashlight if bedbugs weren't having fun around my seat. #LeonardoDiCaprio and #RobertDeNiro act bad It's distracting. Lily Gladstone is fine. After reading the flamboyant book by David Grann, i think its adaptation was narrow and plane. What I liked: Some great shots (Scorsese!) and the movie points straight at evil, ignorance and greed. #Killersoftheflowermoon #scorsese #davidgrann #movie #cinema #bedbug

"But although the bureau was able to capture a few of these killers, there really was this much deeper and darker conspiracy that the bureau never exposed. And when I met with so many of those elders, they began to tell me about these other killings in their families that had never been properly investigated. I realized that this was a story about this culture of killing, about these many people who were committing these crimes." ()

Looking forward to seeing Killers of the Flower Moon, set in 1920s Oklahoma, depicting the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Indian Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror. Base on book by #DavidGrann, directed by Martin #Scorsese

“A colossal tale of the sociopathy of American history"

I do not like audio books.
My focus leaves & before long, I realize I have no idea what’s going on. Also, I don’t find listening to a book near as enjoyable as reading it, something gets lost in the process.

All that to say, I’ve been listening to this one. Granted, it’s taken me 2 times of checking it out at the library. These are all true stories that cover many subjects & the endings all make you think, which I love. I highly recommend.

Even if you hate audio books 😉
