I think this was undoubtedly the best show I've ever been to. "Concert" feels like an understatement, it's a full sensory experience... except taste and smell (for now?). I'm convinced they even play with the temperature during certain songs but maybe just tripping.
Bob did both Maggie's Farm and Throwing Stones in a single show ("Money green, it's the only way / You can buy the whole goddamned government today" 🇵🇸) so I got everything I asked for and more. Mickey started opening a wormhole during drums & space, Oteil maintained the vibe (and is fuckin amazing on drums too), Jeff provided keyboard backbone and funny faces, John is an incredible guitarist and is definitely "Dead to me" by this point (and also provides funny faces).
I will say Shakedown at the Tuscany is pretty lame and lawful compared to the more anarchistic Shakedowns of California (and presumably elsewhere). There are always kind people to make friends with on the lot, and cool stuff to buy, so it's still worth going. But there's no one shouting "Doses! 🐎! 🍄!", all vendors need to pay a fee and have a Nevada tax ID & business license to vend, and there's a noticeable security presence. For now I just have some shirts and stickers to sell, so Shakedown isn't really accessible for really small scale or roaming vendors. I probably wouldn't break even.
Releasing thousands of tripping deadheads into the streets after the show, to sweat and stumble through the opulent facades of Vegas, is beautiful and hilarious. Sphere & Loathing. We got lost.
If you can, GO SEE IT. Then GO SEE IT AGAIN. I'm going again in June if anyone needs a ride. There's nothing like a Dead show, and I suspect there's never been a Dead show like this Dead show (not to say it's necessarily their best ever all the way back to the 60s, I wouldn't know but I think I'd pick an Acid Test... just to say that this is absolutely unique and incredible).
