We walked through Neshaminy Mall today. It’s been cold this weekend and we’ve been doing mall walks to get some steps.

When I first visited this area in the late 1990s this mall was thriving with busy anchor stores, a recent addition, and more. Today the mall seemed about 60% empty. And it wasn’t heated.

I’m happy we wore our coats.

So the guy on one of the "dead mall" channels (plural!) on YouTube says that the mall I grew up going to is "the deadest dead mall he's ever been in."

That's something, right?

Tonight, returned to the second mall that wasn't memories that were clashing with memories that werent-

Wanting to see the lot and the solitary building, only to find demolition crews working on the whole building. At least what was left. I found myself with permission to take photos and videos of what I could

Until I couldn't from a construction crew.

Then heading back somewhere else to see what was left, I find the memory of real- the mall offices with still power running through them. Almost like them. A mess like last time I went there, but left intact.

My only wish was to save what property documents, maps, and diagrams that were left there so there could be something archived.

I had my wish. Shortly after, I woke up.

That part of the dream represents some of my inmost desires of wishing to have been able to preserve more of North Dekalb Mall. I still need to get more of what I have scanned and uploaded online, but there was so much more that was lost in it's destruction.

I wish I could have been able to do more but my body refused to let me. I need to edit my video soon.

An architectural survey of North Dekalb Mall from 1977. It is very yellowed and has wear from being folded into fourths for decades. Going from left to right is a grocery store, then the main Mall with it's stores, and then a department store by the name of Rich's. To the right of that is the main highway.

Very interesting short film by Bright Sun Films. Along with the usual urban exploration bits, he gives a good history of how and why it failed.

The shopping centre was supposed to revitalise downtown Hamilton, Ontario.

But within six years, it had just a 40% occupancy rate.

A decade after opening, it sold for only CAN$3.6 million — just 5% of what it originally cost to build.

The lights have been out all week in the Walmart/dead mall parking lot where I catch the morning bus to my day job. This bus is consistently 15 to 20 minutes late. This parking lot is not a very pleasant place to be in the day time, let alone on cold, dark winter mornings.

I was reminded of this today by someone else that mentioned a dead mall they took pictures of is getting demolished, but Im glad Dan Bell made a video covering one of the malls (Oak Hollow) I went to and enjoyed as a child. Its my hope to recreate in VRC someday.

Anyone else here tend to dream about #DeadMalls or other #LiminalSpaces? I think that’s a big part about what makes the #LiminalSpace #aesthetic so creepy; they’re so uncanny and surreal, like what we see in our dreams.
