I logged back into #pinterest recently after reading about how it's gaining popularity again. Check out how the push and email notification toggles are all hidden behind accordions 🙀 #darkpattern #darkpatterns #DeceptivePatterns #deceptivepattern

Super #deceptivepattern: The "pricing" link redirects to a "Subscribe/Sign in" page.

The classical "your data before any useful information" deceptive pattern.

Is this #UX issue a #darkpattern #deceptivepattern? No! Don't assume malice before incompetence. The website for Pearson VUE testing centers, where people sometimes reschedule extremely stressful exams they want to be well prepared for, lets users successfully complete the rescheduling process online, and then doesn't actually reschedule them. Testees then show up on the wrong day, possibly with the original testing date passed, and they can't get a refund.

Just a reminder if you are thinking of leaving #Facebook or are even just collecting your posts and photos and things to have them locally: be prepared for some shenanigans with your download.

#Facebook will happily email you that they've started a download request, and their email will tell you they will send a second email when it's done.

For me at least, that second email never came, even well after the download request was complete.

I think this is an "oops" that's not really an "oops". After 4 days with no followup email, I ended up logging in to see what was going on. The download request was not only done, it had completed about 2 days beforehand *and the download was about to expire*, which would require me to do the whole damn request all over again.

It feels like a #DeceptivePattern to get you to log in more often than you would, just to be sure you got something you requested and have every reason to expect would be done timely.

You know how it is: You start writing one #blog article, but while writing you come up with an idea for another one. And here it is, how to cancel a #figma subscription:

The recent #UxCollective newsletter had a link for a user research report by #maze, which I wanted to download for my wife, because I have a "fake" #DuckDuckGo email.

I was expecting I could download it "for free" but have to give them my name, company I work at and my email.

A fucked up #DeceptivePattern because something is not for free when you're giving away private information. I want to write about this and ask you to send me your "best" examples of this pattern.

Popover on Maze website to exchange personal information for a user research report.

The headline says "Download the report for free" and it contains 6 input fields. The color contrast makes it hard to read, it has a disabled button and on input just says "1-10" which is probably for the company size?

@joelanman My favourite Youtube/Google : only way to log into a work Google account (even .gov.uk!) is redirecting via acount.youtube.com (so admins can't block YT), and by default that sends a notification to my personal iPad Youtube App (that has 0 work accounts set up, and where I don't log into YT).

So, apparently when you click on "free trial" button from Voice Dream Reader, you automatically get subscribed to the highest pricing. You then need to find where, in iTunes (huuu???) you can cancel this, and hope, it is actually be cancelled. This is very deceptive.
Also notice how their modal says "November 6" and the apple email says I have to cancel one day before.
So, I suppose that, if I cancel on the 6th, I will be charged?
#DeceptivePattern

Screenshot of my email with a “subscription confirmation” for 55EUR/year for Voice Dream Reader that will automatically be renewed after my free one week trial, a screenshot of iTunes with the subscription and of the tool modal saying "you're in free trial period, your free trial ends on Nov 6 2023 and will automatically renew for 55EUR/year"

Behold, the shadiest ecommerce ever: you can't search or use the navigation without creating an account. This is, wow, next level. Why would I create and account, if I don't even know what I can find on your site?
Also, bonus for shitty keyboard accessibility, you have to through the whole rest of the site before being able to get your focus in that damn modal.

@drupalthoughts Re the "most trusted" PDF viewer, OMG, I'd entirely forgotten that Adobe tries to sneak in the McAfee security crap along with their "free" reader if you simply accept their defaults and click yes during their install. (which is what the GIF shows)

That's a all right!

I will start using the wording #DeceptivePattern instead of #DarkPattern. Cause wording matters. Thanks for the push, Silvia! silviamaggidesign.com/design/d
