A few hours have gone by and the states are not increasing, and the site is still behaving normally AFAIK, so now Iโll let it run and check counters once in a while. ๐ฅณ
Such a relief if this fixed it, heading into con is our busiest period of the year and the last thing we need is site reachability problems.
I feel a bit like a digital archeologist, but without the fantastic FreeBSD forums and decades of mailing lists searchable I would never have found a solution.

The clock is ticking.

Alright, #DEFCON web sites are back with the patch appied. I had to tweak it a bit, but seems to be happy now.
Now I'll keep an eye on things, and if all is well the LAST_ACK and FIN_WAIT_2 states should no longer increase forever consuming all sockets. https://defcon.org
Please let me know if you see any strange behavior! Next up to patch the http://forum.defcon.org server. It is suffering the same fate.
#FREEBSD
OK, this is crazy. I (think) I have finally found a clue as to what is causing the web server to slowly choke on too many open connections.
This thread from 2001 (!!!) explains the problem, AND IT IS STILL HAPPENING 24 years later. #FreeBSD

I'm rebuilding the #DEFCON server with the patch from 2013 (!!) to see if it helps.
#defcon all reservations activated. now to create something interesting for this year.
@jeff For sure there are, you are not alone.
In our conference program we mark things that are friendly for parents and kids to hack and explore together. Last year we launched DC Next Gen https://dcnextgen.org/
For example here is the program from last year, it should give you a better idea: https://media.defcon.org/DEF%20CON%2032/DEF%20CON%2032%20program.pdf

@thedarktangent HEY! kinda random. But do dad's ever take their children to #defcon?
I have a 9yo son who loves coding academy, playing wifh locks, and tinkering with his pizero.
But whenever I see clips online about DefCon - it doesnt seem many bring little ones. Is there an age recommendation?

DEF CON Homework alert!
This Saturday #defconmovienight is showing โWall-Eโ, a film that touches on many of the theme ideas of #defcon33.
Some questions to ponder when you watch our boxy little hero save the future:
Why is the ship called โAxiomโ?
Are we closer to the cozy dystopia Wall-E suggests?
What do you think Earth looks like 10-20-100 years from the filmโs ending?
How do we best resist the fate of the short-fingered humans of the Axiom?
Join us Saturday 8pm PDT in the movie-night-text channel of the discord (discord.gg/defcon) for film and conversation. Liquified pastries optional.

I have made mistakes doing my big volunteer organization thing.
I always apologize, learn from the thing I did wrong, and make it up to people whatever way I can.
But then, I'm not a #Defcon admin
Every year at @defcon, AppSec Village showcases some of the brightest voices in application security โ and we record those talks to share with the global community for free on YouTube.
But recording 2.5 days of our Main Stage sessions takes real resources.
Weโre 100% volunteer-run, and this year, we need your help to make DEF CON 33 recordings happen.
