Bean to Cup Machines: Nespresso Killers!

When it comes to coffee, there’s something about the ritual of brewing that just hits differently. For you, for me, for many readers of this website, the handcrafted “slow food” nature of coffee is a big part of its draw.

But let’s be real. Most folks aren’t about that life. They just want coffee. Fast, efficient, convenient, and if it tastes good, that’s a bonus. Thus, enter the pod and capsule machine: Nespresso, Keurig, and the like. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it’s convenient.

What if I told you there’s a way to level up that coffee game for the convenience chasers? I’m talking better taste, lower cost, and less environmental guilt, all without sacrificing convenience. That’s where the super automatic comes in. Those bean-to-cup boxes that are increasingly popular.

Some run into the thousands of dollars, like the flagship model from Jura, the Z10. But many more are approachable in price, like the one I’m focusing on today: the De’Longhi Magnifica Start, a $500 (average sale price; full MSRP is $650) machine with automated milk frothing abiltiies.

This isn’t going to be a review of that machine (our Senior Editor is on that ball for later publication), but instead, we’re going to break down why this is a game-changer for anyone ready to ditch pods and capsules. And why you, as a serious Coffee Geek, should become a fan of this machine – not for yourself – but for friends and fam in your life still rocking Nespressos.

Cost Savings: More Sips, Less Spend

Let’s talk money. Pod coffee might seem cheap at first, but those little capsules rack up costs fast. A Nespresso pod averages $0.85 per shot (using just 6g of coffee!). If you’re drinking two cups a day, that’s $620 a year. And if you’re like my Uncle Keith, who doubles up on capsules for each drink, you could be spending $1,200+ annually.

Enter the super automatic espresso machine, like the Magnifica Start. With whole beans, you’re looking at around $18/lb for higher end coffee. The Magnifica Start uses between 9 and 12g of coffee per brew (depending on your strength setting); we’ll average at 11g of coffee per cup, making the cost $0.41 per drink. Even with the $500ish upfront cost of the Magnifica Start, Keith would spend just $676 in the first year (machine + coffee), saving over $600 compared to Nespresso. And every year after? Pure bank-worthy savings.

Imagine what Uncle Keith could do with that extra cash. Maybe he’ll finally upgrade his phone from the iPhone 6 (his is bent!), or better yet, get his favorite niece a killer Christmas gift. Either way, ditching pods for beans is a no-brainer—for your wallet and taste buds.

Quality That’ll Make You Say “Wow”

Speaking of better quality, let’s talk flavor, touched on in the last bit. Coffee pods are pre-ground. I could stop right there and you’d be all like “oh, yeah…”, but there’s more. It’s not only preground, but in Nestle’s case, it is also some of the cheapest cheap ass coffee they can source globally. Why do you think so many capsules are flavored and sugared up?

Super automatic machines, on the other hand, grind beans fresh for every cup. That’s the difference between drinking something “meh” and something that actually tastes like it was made by a barista. Freshly ground beans retain their oils and aromatics, giving Uncle Keith a richer, more complex flavor profile.

And because whole beans are used, the super auto owner is in control. Do they love a bold, chocolatey roast? Cool. Prefer something fruity and light? Go for it. With a capsule machine, they’re stuck with whatever pods are available, but with a super automatic, the world of coffee is your oyster (or, you know, your bean).

Mother Earth Will Thank You

We won’t get too deep into the environmental impact of coffee pods here, mainly because my Coffee Sis, Zuzanna, already crushed it in her feature article here on CoffeeGeek (seriously, check it out).

Here’s the scoop: switching to a bean-to-cup machine slashes waste big time. All you’re left with are coffee grounds, which are fully compostable. If your beans came in a mylar or plastic bag, that’s about 15g of waste. Compare that to the 150+ grams of waste from capsules, cup for cup. And if you’re buying whole beans in paper bags? Even less trash to stress about.

Variety at Your Fingertips

One of the best things about a super automatic espresso machine is the versatility.  Even entry level machines like the Magnifica Start we’re trying to convince Uncle Keith to consider offers five fully customizable and programmable drink options, plus hot water. Fancier machines offer more. 

On the Magnifica Start, the two milk drinks are “latte macchiato” and “latte cappuccino”, and out of the box, the macchiato one makes a huge, Starbucks sized milky drink. But it can be easily programmed so it delivers an actual macchiato as we know it: 2oz of frothed milk, followed by a nice 30ml of espresso. Or if Uncle Keith wants 15oz of frothed and steamed milk and 45ml of espresso, he can set it up like that too.

Convenience Meets Simplicity

Here’s the thing: people love Nespresso and Keurig machines because they’re convenient. Fair enough. Some even fall for the shiny, jewel-like capsules—very aesthetic! But let’s be real, do those folks really love coffee? Anyway, moving on.

Here’s a hot take: a bean-to-cup machine might actually be more convenient for a day-to-day coffee fix. Hear me out. Super-automatic machines are legit one-button wonders. Unlike capsule machines, you’re not constantly opening, tossing pods, and repeating the process. With a bean-to-cup machine, like the Magnifica Start, press one button, and done. Every few days, empty the grinds bin and refill the reservoir. Easy peasy.

Plus, these machines basically clean themselves. The Magnifica Start does a rinse when it powers on and off. Made a latte? It flashes a blue light, politely asking you to press a button to engage the auto clean cycle for the frother. Boom—done. Why doesn’t it do it automatically, sans button press after a milk drink? It wants you to put a cup under the wand to capture the milk waste. I did say the machine is polite!

Once a week, all that’s needed is a good rinse of the removable brew group under hot water, a toss of the grinds bin in the dishwasher, and the milk frother parts would like a quick clean (yep, most of them are dishwasher-safe too). With a water filter in place, scale buildup is minimal, and your machine stays happy for years.

Compare that to pod machines. Sure, they seem low-maintenance, but you’re still descaling, opening and removing pods after every drink, and constantly filling that miniscule water tank. A super-automatic takes care of most of the heavy lifting. Bonus? The easy-removable brew group and drip tray make the manual cleaning part a breeze.

The Bottom Line

Switching from a pod or capsule machine to a super automatic espresso machine like the De’Longhi Magnifica Start isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a boss level improvement. Think about it: serious money saved (especially after year one, where it’s basically free coffee), a lighter environmental footprint, and a whole new world of coffee options. All unlocked. All still super convenient.

Now, real talk—a bean-to-cup machine might not vibe with the espresso dreams you’ve got for your kit at home. But you should 100% consider being a vocal fan of these machines. Why? Because they’re legit changing the coffee game for millions of coffee consumers that value convenience.

Super-automatics open the door for so many people who care about convenience but still want coffee that actually tastes good. For them, it’s a major step up. Even better: these machines often act like a gateway to something bigger. As folks start to realize how amazing their coffee can taste, they’ll start to crave more. AeroPress Colors!

We all know and love the AeroPress. The basic model was $30 for so long, and is now around $40, some 20 years after it was introduced. The Tritan plastic models were a $10 premium at $50, and offered a nice aesthetic upgrade.

During the Prime Big Deals Event, all the Tritan versions - the clear and five different color choices - are $35, or 30% off. This deal is just for Prime Members.

Tiger Siphonysta

Well, we love the Siphonysta overall at CoffeeGeek (see our review, linked above), but a $500 it is a premium, luxury purchase for most.

This thing is kind of insane. Occasionally we get social media pings asking us to review it: the Balmuda The Brew device is a hyper-controllable pour over device. You can even control the drip rate down to 0.2ml. Beautiful, functional, and very tunable.

OXO Brew Grinder with Scale

OXO's Grinder with built in scale is not worth the $300 full MSRP price. It's not a bad grinder, it's just that way better options exist at this price point.

But during the fall Prime Big Deals event, this grinder is 50% off, and is $153 just for Prime Members only. At that price, this is a worthy entry level all purpose grinder with a scale integrated.

Ikape 53mm Click Tamper

Espro started the whole click tamper thing back in 2002; since then, improvements like levelling bases and more precise piston sizes have upped the game. Tamping level is one of the most important things you can do to get a good shot of espresso.

The Ikape Breville Barista compatible (also Bambino) click tamper is 20% off, on sale at $32 for Amazon Prime Members.

Amazon Basics 1.7L Kettle

Sometimes you just want a high volume kettle that heats up fast. We use 2 of these Amazon Basics kettles in our cupping setup because they are high volume (1.7L), and because they are fast, with a 1500W element involved. If you don't need a fancy pour over gooseneck, this is the best deal in kettles right now.

At $21.50, also a fantastic deal, for Prime Members only. 

Fellow Products

Fellow, another company that rarely goes on sale, has three entries in the Fall Prime Big Deals Event. Two are exclusive to Prime members; the Clyde Kettle is open to all.

Fellow Ode II Grinder

Fellow's second entry with their Ode grinder is much better than the original, and though it still cannot do a proper espresso grind, it is one of the better brew grinders on the market anywhere near this price point.

The white unit only is on a Prime Exclusive price for $276, which is 20% off the normal $345 retail price. This is the first time I've seen the Ode II on sale.

Fellow Clyde 1.5L Kettle

Fellow has brought their design language and style to a more traditional kettle, one with a large volume, fast heat up times, and cordless technology. The Clyde is normally $125 and this is the first time I've seen it go on sale.

Best of all, the current price of $95 on Amazon is available to all. This was supposed to be $99 for Prime Members only, but a check this morning shows an even lower price, and no Prime requirement.

Fellow Opus Grinder

Fellow's Opus grinder may be plastic fantastic, but unlike the Ode II, the Opus can grind for espresso. At this Prime Exclusive price of $156, it is also potentially the best value in an all purpose grinder available at the moment.

Definitely a deal you want to get, if you're looking for a good starter grinder to handle all your single dose grinding needs. The Black model is also on sale.

Breville Products

Breville has put several products on sale during the Amazon Big Deals Event, though the biggest and best deal amongst the bunch — the Infuser Model (at $225 off) — is already sold out. Still, there’s some lowest prices of the year available below. Amazon also has a landing page for all the Breville Espresso machines on sale this Prime Event.

Breville Barista Express

At $549 for the Fall Prime Big Deals Event (a price available to all shoppers!!), this is the lowest price in the past two years for the Barista Express (it was also this price during the summer Prime event).

This is the best selling espresso machine of the last 10 years, and here's your chance to get it at its lowest price in some time. Both the Brushed Steel and Black Sesame models are at $550.

Breville Duo Temp

We've never tested or used the Duo Temp, but Youtube's Coffee Kev, gives this machine top marks as a bare bones entry level machine. It has the same thermocoil as the Barista Express, similar 53mm portafilter, can deliver hot water and has ample steam power.

It is also currently the heaviest discounted Breville machine in the Prime Big Deals Sale: $200 off, making it just $300 (a 40% savings), and this deal is open to everyone!

Breville Barista Express Impress

The Barista Express has, as far as we know, only gone on sale once before and that was for $749. It is the Barista Express (incl the older thermoblock which some think is better than the new thermojet), but with an assisted grind and dose system.

In a Prime Big Deals Day offer that is open to everyone, not just Prime Members, the machine is $700, a discount of 22% off the MSRP. Available in steel, black and blue models.

Breville Barista Pro

Breville's Barista Pro is a thermojet (instant on) system with a lot of upgrades and beefier build than the Bambino Plus or Express models. The grinder feature Baratza's M2 burrs, and the control panel is more advanced and offers more diagnostic feedback on shots. 

During this sale event, it is 20% off, and available for $679 to all shoppers (not just Prime Members) in black, brushed steel, blue and red velvet cake.

Breville Barista Touch

Breville’s lowest price “Assisted Barista” machine is this one, the Barista Touch. This machine features the automated drink builds via the colour touch screen, automated milk steaming and more. Also has the Baratza burrs inside.

The machine drops 20% down to $799 for Prime Big Deals week for all shoppers. 

Barista Touch Impress

This is Breville's most advanced assisted barista machine in the Barista lineup: the Barista Touch Impress. It has a full automated milk steaming system, can build a wide variety of drinks automatically, and grinds and doses automatically using Baratza M2 burrs. You just lever down the tamp and move the portafilter to the grouphead.

This machine is $200 off during Prime Big Deals Day, at $1200 (down from $1500), and is available to all shoppers, in several color choices.

Chemex On Sale

Chemex is a brand that rarely goes on sale, though sometimes third party vendors do offer better prices on certain products. Delonghi's popular Dedica lineup has a wide range of options, and this model is the absolute entry point. It is also by far the cheapest price the Dedica has been in years.

During the Prime Sale, this entry level Dedica is just $160 for Prime Members only. Good entry point into espresso!

Delonghi Dedica Arte

This is the next level up on the Dedica, with a traditional steam wand and some other improvements over the basic model. If you can stretch the extra $40, and $200 is your limit for espresso, this is the machine for you.

During this Prime Big Deals Event, the Dedica d'Arte is just $200, which is 33% off the $300 normal price. For Prime Members only.

Delonghi Dinamica

Delonghi has a couple of super automatics that could be considered their flagships; this is one of them. It can build 18 different espresso based drinks, hot or cold. The fully automated milk system helps everything become a one button touch operation.

During the Prime sale, this machine is 45% off, selling for $1000 (down from $1820!!). The deal is available to everyone not just Prime members.

Delonghi Magnifica

If $1000 is too much to spend on a super automatic (even if it is $800 off), how does $400 sound? Because this is Delonghi's entry level super auto, which normally sells at $500. Basic, automated drink building functionality, with a panarello-styled froth aider system.

This machine is $100 off, selling for $399 during the Prime sale, to Prime members only.

Delongi Magnifica Evo Pro

Delonghi's mid range super automatic, with some advanced features (removable brewing group, higher end grinder) is on at a great price during this Prime sale for $549  and its' a deal available to everyone.

If you want their automated milk system version, it's only $50 more, at $599.

Gevi Deluxe Espresso Machine

To be clear, our listing of this machine isn't an endorsement, but we've gotten feedback from consumers through our reddit channel that this is a machine we should consider for our Best Budget Espresso Machines Guide.  It's a kinda copy of the Barista Express, but with a second heating system for the steam wand, independent of the brewing thermoblock. Customers seem to love it.

The main reason it's listed is the price: $349 for Prime Members only during this current sale. That's less than the Bambino Plus!

Phillips 2200 Series Super Auto

Ich liebe es, wenn man Geräte so einfach reparieren und warten kann. 12 Schrauben und das gesamte Gehäuse fällt ab.

This year, we had a confidential look at the entire Prime Day offerings about 3 weeks ago, and enough big name products were there – some of which rarely go on sale – that we bit the bullet. We have put together a guide (and preview) of some of the best Prime Day deals coming on some really top end products, including Technivorm, Fellow, Breville, Phillips, and Delonghi. These are for the US Amazon story only (my apologies to my fellow Canadians!)

Two very important things to note: first, to get the lowest, rock bottom prices listed for some of the items below, you have to be an Amazon Prime Member. You can sign up here, or visit the Prime Day Portal if you are already a Prime Member.

Second, a lot of these deals are “Prime Week” pricing, and are available to all shoppers on Amazon, whether a Prime Member or not. In some cases, these Prime Week prices are only $10 or $20 more than the Prime Member lowest price, so you’d still be getting a fantastic deal. And if you don’t find the product you’re looking for below, visit the Deals portal to see and search all the sale items.

Now onto the Prime Day offerings!

Technivorm

Technivorm brewers almost never go on sale. But for Amazon Prime Day, they have two sale prices with substantial discounts. During this week, the brewers are 30% off, but during their Prime time, will drop down to as much as 35% off their price. It was the listing of Technivorm products that gave me the final shove to finally publish a Prime Day sale article on CoffeeGeek: these sale prices are some of the lowest you’ll ever find Technivorms at.

Technivorm KBT MoccaMaster

This is the 40oz thermal carafe version of the Technivorm, normally $340, and down to $227, in a deal that's available to all shoppers on Amazon.

Technivorm KBGV MoccaMaster

The 'standard' Technivorm, the one that's available in a gazillion colours. Our primary link is for the Juniper Green Model. For Prime week, all the ones sold direct by Amazon are 30% off, down to $251 (from $359) and are available to all shoppers.

Prime Members will get these models for another $11 off, at $240 on July 16. This Prime deal is now over, but it still available for $250.

Here's a few other colours to consider: Stone Grey, Off White, Orange, Matt Silver, and Yellow Pepper.

Technivorm MoccaMaster Single

One of the more unique Technivorm products, tiny, and engineered to brew a SCA certified single cup or mug of coffee. It's normally $250, but during Prime Week, all shoppers can get it for $177.

Prime Members will get the one day Prime sale price of $167 on July 16. This Prime Only price is now expired, but it can still be bought for $177, or 29% off.

Technivorm XL MoccaMaster

Everything's oversized on this rare Technivorm: A 60oz (1.8l) big batch brewer, brewing to the same SCA Gold Cup standard as the other Technivorm models. It is another Prime Week special, normally $395, dropping down to $287 for all shoppers.

Prime Members will get a one day $267 price on July 17.

Fellow Products

Fellow, another company that rarely goes on sale, has two entries we could find in the Prime Day event. Both are only available to Prime Members (come on, Fellow! Share the love wider, willya?

Fellow EKG Kettle - White

Fellow's iconic pour over kettle, normally priced at $165 for the white model, will drop to $132 during its Prime Day Event starting today, July 16.

As of July 17, this deal is open to everyone and also includes the black kettle!

Fellow EKG Kettle - Copper

The even more beautiful copper EKG Kettle from Fellow is going on a Prime Member exclusive sale during Prime Day: dropping down to $156 from its $195 normal price starting on July 16 (today).  This offer is for Prime members only.

Breville Products

We already saw a very good sale for a few select Breville Products about 3 months ago, but we’ll see even better Prime Day price drops on a different range of products. Breville is also having Prime Week pricing on most of their equipment.

Breville Grind Control Brewer

Breville’s excellent grinder and auto drip coffee maker combo normally never goes on sale. Well, for its Prime Day on July 17, dropping from $350 down to $279, a $70 price drop for any Amazon shopper, including non Prime members.

Breville Precision Brewer

Breville’s Precision Brewer is another of Breville’s coffee line that rarely goes on sale, but the thermal model is 10% off for Prime Week, going from $330 to $299, and this deal is available to all shoppers!

Breville Barista Express

At $549 for Prime Week (a price available to all shoppers), this is the lowest price in the past year for the Barista Express.

Prime Members will enjoy an additional $20 off on July 17, making it $529, which is the lowest all time price.

The Prime Deal is over, but the sale price continues.

Breville Barista Touch

Breville’s lowest price “Assisted Barista” machine, the Touch Espresso, is dropping 20% down to $799 for Prime Week for all shoppers. This machine features the automated drink builds via the colour touch screen, automated milk steaming and more. Also has the Baratza burrs inside.

Breville Barista Express Impress

The Impress didn't go on sale last time Breville had a big sale. This time around all shoppers can buy this machine for one day (July 17) for $749 (down from $900).

Prime Members can get it even cheaper on July 17: for $712! This deal will only last 24 hours.

This Prime Deal is over, but the machine is still sale for $749 this week.

Delonghi Products

Delonghi machines have frequent sales on Amazon, but for Prime Day, they will be at their lowest prices for the year. We don’t test Delonghi machines currently, but my good friend Kev (of Coffee Kev Youtube fame) does test them and generally likes them.

Delonghi Magnifica

Delonghi's Entry Level Super Automatic, it is normally priced at $500, but Prime Members (only) can get it as a Prime Day deal for $399, which is one of the lowest bean to cup options out there today.

Delongi Magnifica Evo Pro

Delonghi's mid range super automatic, with some advanced features (removable brewing group, higher end grinder) is on at a crazy 52% off during Prime Week for $499 (down from $1,039) and its' a deal available to everyone.

If you want their automated milk system version, it's only $50 more, at $449.

Delonghi La Specialista Arte Evo

Delonghi's direct competitor for the Breville Barista Express adds cold brew ability to the Arte version. It's normally $750, but drops down to $499 for Prime Week in a deal available to all shoppers.

Delonghi La Specialista Arte Evo

This is Delonghi’s competitor for Breville’s Bambino machine, and the Arte version has an upgraded manual steam wand. $100 off, going from $299 down to $199 during Prime Week. This deal is available to all shoppers.

Other Great Deals on Coffee Gear

Zwilling Enfinigy Kettle

A double walled, temperature-setting, 1.5 litre kettle that is normally at $170, is on for $150 during Prime Week (not a bad deal). On July 16, Prime Members will enjoy a one day sale price of $105.

Bosch 800 Series VeroCafe

Bosch's flagship bean to cup machine with a built in automated milk system, cup warmer, touch screen and more. $2200 normally, but on day one of the Prime Day sale (today, July 16), Prime Members will get a price of $1,599 on it.

The Prime Only price has ended, but an open Prime Week price of $1699 continues.

Bosch 300 Series VeroCafe

The 300 series is Bosch's entry level bean to cup machines. During Prime Week it is $100 off (going from $900 to $800) for all shoppers. On July 16, Prime Members can purchase it a the sale price of $599, which is $300 off.

Phillips 2200 Series Super Auto

Phillips (who owned Gaggia) have put their entry point super automatic machine on at $499 during Prime Week, a drop of $150 off their normal $650 price. On July 16,  Prime Members can get it even cheaper, at $400 (38% off!).

OXO Brew Grinder with Scale

OXO's $300 Brew grinder is overpriced at full retail, but during Prime Week, it is much better priced at $240 for all shoppers.

On July 16 (today), Prime Members get a super price on the grinder, $158, or almost half price. This one day deal is now over.

Smeg Super Automatic

Smeg’s Super Automatic, normally $800, will be on sale for Prime Week at $629 (the red unit only) for all shoppers, making an interesting choice in the bean to cup market. However, During the two day Prime Event, everyone can buy this machine at $399, and you don't have to be a Prime member to get the price.

Last Minute Participants and Deals

There have been some last minute additions to Amazon’s Prime Day deals in the coffee sphere. 

The Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, in Stainless Steel was just updated to be $399 during the Prime Day event, and this price is valid for all shoppers, not just Prime members.

The accessories maker MHW-3Bomber has put almost everything they make on sale exclusively for Prime Members. You can view all their offerings here.

In a similar vein, Casabrews, and up and comer in the ultra budget arena of espresso machines (we’re going to be reviewing two of their products soon!) also signed on as a late Prime Day / Prime Member exclusive sales pricing partner, and all their machines are currently on at their lowest prices, again just for Prime Members.

Timemore just announced last week they too would be offering Prime Member only pricing during Prime day, and the majority of their products are now at the lowest price of the year. Some of their grinders are as low as $55, and C3 Pro models are under $72. Some of the deals are buried deep. For example, if you are a Prime member, you can buy the flagship Timemore S3 grinder for $114.48 ($127.20 Prime Day price, plus a 10% off coupon).

Staresso, another up and coming parts and accessories maker, is taking a late part in the whole Amazon Prime Day craziness. Almost all their products are available at Prime Member only discounts. One product in particular that we are currently reviewing is the Discovery II USB-rechargeable grinder. It’s 20% off for Prime members, and there’s an additional $20 coupon available, making it $100 even. And it’s a fairly decent grinder, on par with Timemore C2 series.

Wacaco, the makers of the Picopresso travel espresso makers and a variety of other portable and travel coffee and espresso devices, has joined the Prime Day party. For example, the Nanopresso, their latest model, is just $55 in a variety of colours, exclusive pricing for Prime members.

Even Aeropress is in on the action, putting many of their products up for Prime Day with Prime Member exclusive pricing. One example – the OG Aeropress is at a historically low price of just $28 right now, for Prime Members only.

Attention "Delonghi Nespresso Vertuo" coffee machine owners:

If you:
✅ See 2 🔺red🔺 blinks on the Power button, when you attempt to brew a cup
✅ And you make your own capsules (which you should cuz Nespresso capsules are awful)

...try THOROUGHLY wiping both the top & bottom of the rim of the capsule with a paper towel so the bar code under the rim is completely clean of oils & grounds.

You may find it suddenly brews like it should. This works for me everytime.
