You know what to save for the future, when it's time to write about the least popular president in North America ever, less than Jefferson Davis.

A post at xtwitter by harryshannon that says: "Reporters say that this is one of the pictures that trump wants removed from the internet. You know what to do!"

The image below is from trumpery trumps inauguration 20th of January 2025, where you can see a lot of police and secret service agents out after the road where the presidential care is driving towards the ceremony. There are some audience, but almost less than the number of law enforcement officers protecting the fat orange.

A quotation from Montesquieu

No tyranny is more cruel than the one practiced in the shadow of the laws and under color of justice — when, so to speak, one proceeds to drown the unfortunate on the very plank by which they had saved themselves.

[tr. Lowenthal (1965)]

Commuting and pardoning political allies and supporters is a sign of #authoritarian and #despotic rulers. Why should any individual be allowed to commute or pardon people, who have been convicted in a proper trial? #democracy #authoritarianism #despotism

There is not even an attempt to conceal the motivation: ""This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!" Trump wrote."

The new political climate

US journalist and professor Jeff Jarvis "describes a dangerous authoritarian shift: freedom of the press, education, and the courts are under attack, critical voices like Jimmy Kimmel are being silenced, and many media outlets are adapting out of fear—or are being taken over outright." (podcast)

A quotation from Victor Hugo

Certainly the influence of the past is very strong at the present time; it is reviving, and this rejuvenation of a corpse is surprising. It is on the march, and it seems to be winning — a dead thing yet a conqueror! It comes with its army of superstitions, its sword, which is despotism, its banner, which is ignorance, and in recent years it has won ten battles. It advances, laughs, and threatens; it is at our door.

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) French writer
Les Misérables, Part 4 “St. Denis,” Book 7 “Argot,” ch. 4 (4.7.4) (1862) [tr. Denny (1976)]

A quotation from Cicero

No person is so foolish that they don’t understand that if we remain asleep at this moment we will have to live through a rule that is not only cruel and arrogant but ignoble and disgraceful too. You know this man’s arrogance, his friends, and his whole household. To serve shameful lusts, bullies, disgusting and irreverent thieves, those drunkards — well, that is the worst suffering married to the greatest dishonor.

[Nemo est tam stultus qui non intellegat, si indormierimus huic tempori, non modo crudelem superbamque dominationem nobis sed ignominiosam etiam et flagitiosam ferendam. Nostis insolentiam Antoni, nostis amicos, nostis totam domum. Libidinosis, petulantibus, impuris, impudicis, aleatoribus, ebriis servire, ea summa miseria est summo dedecore coniuncta.]

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) Roman orator, statesman, philosopher
Philippics [Philippicae; Antonian Orations], No. 3, ch. 14 / sec. 34-35 (3.14/3.34-35) (44-12-20 BC) [tr. @sentantiq (2021)]

“From offshore detention camps and pardons for seditionists to open attacks on judges, watchdogs, and journalists, this administration has followed, with unnerving precision, the authoritarian playbook. And make no mistake, this isn’t speculative. These are real-world policies and executive actions, documented in public records and reported by independent outlets. The pattern is not subtle. The mask is off.”

A quotation from Alexander Hamilton

The truth unquestionably is, that the only path to a subversion of the republican system of the Country is, by flattering the prejudices of the people, and exciting their jealousies and apprehensions, to throw affairs into confusion, and bring on civil commotion. Tired at length of anarchy, or want of government, they may take shelter in the arms of monarchy for repose and security.

A quotation from Thomas Jefferson

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) American political philosopher, polymath, statesman, US President (1801-09)
Document (1776-07-02), “Declaration of Independence”

Dictatorships foster oppression, dictatorships foster servitude, dictatorships foster cruelty; more abominable is the fact that they foster idiocy.
