I've just finished Josephine Tey's "The Franchise Affair" and have been struck by its conservatism. This excellent Sarah Waters essay spotlights some of the fears and resentments seething in the book.
I would recommend "The Franchise Affair" not just as a gripping detective story but also as an insight into the post WW2 Tory mind.

So I finished cuckoo's calling by robert galbraith and liked it. It felt quite realistic with interesting characters and it wasn't too obvious who the murderer was. Just requested the next one.

I really enjoy reading #detectivenovels, #crimenovels as escapism but I am heartily sick of detectives with their ‘own dark secrets’ or personal turmoil etc, which, when over-laboured gets in the way of the actual detective story (and sometimes means they behave in really stupid ways). I want them to be human, but I also want the focus to be on the ‘crime’ and detecting not on their personal angst! #readingnovels

I started "Hamlet, Revenge!“ by Michael Innes. It seems to me ridiculously mannerist and self consciously meta, but I’m enjoying it immensely (probably because of its #benoitblanc like atmosphere). If you are into Dorothy Sayers brainy and literary mysteries , you might like this.

I love the way she shifts perspectives between the best friend & colleague of the victim, the detective and the best friend´s teenage daughter. And then she has invented a Victorian ghost story author and written a ghost story supposedly by him, which she uses as an essential background to the plot. I love it 🙂

Just bagsied the first #MissFisher #book (#CocaineBlues by #KerryGreenwood) for all of £2.90 inc p&p! Last time I searched for it, it was very difficult to get hold of and expensive. (The library had no copies either, so I read a later book in the series.)
