Not sure why she'd say don't use the post. They were in a labour disruption so deliveries were uncertain, but they've got a tentative deal and they're all back at work. If you send it air/first class/whatever the UK post calls it, it should be relatively quick and reliable. If what you're sending would attract any duty / excise / taxes, Canada Post also imposes the lowest fees for clearing customs. That might not affect you, if it's a gift of low value.
DHL is "meh". FedEx is quick and reliable, and expensive. UPS is cheaper, fairly reliable, and tries not to run over packages with its trucks more than a third of the time, max. [1] Both impose fairly high customs and brokerage charges unless you use their most expensive options which include them IIRC.
[1] I literally had two deliveries in a row squashed flat with obvious big-truck tire tracks across them.
