Arctic #algae aren't immobile or entombed. They're not just surviving either—they're gliding into the record books phys.org/news/2025-09-scientis

"When they compared #Arctic diatoms with temperate relatives gliding along glass, the polar species moved much faster, hinting at an evolutionary advantage... Could they be moving resources through the Arctic food web?"

@skyfaller @nancywisser I wonder how the Academy of Natural Sciences of #Philadelphia came to be the publisher of a book about #Montana’s #diatoms. Where are all the Montanan academic presses?

They oughta be ashamed that they let some east coast press publish the definitive work about their state’s diatoms, written by the curator of the Montana Diatom Collection! Is there no state pride in Big Sky Country??

When I ordered "Fishes of the Wissahickon" from Drexel, they accidentally sent me "Diatoms of Montana and Western North America: Catalog and Atlas of Species in the Montana Diatoms Collection" by Loren Bahls instead. They're sending the correct book, but they don't want me to return "Diatoms of Montana".

What should I do with "Diatoms of Montana"? It's two volumes, pretty thick. If I lived in Montana I'd probably hang on to it, but I'm not that into diatoms or Montana.

Crummy photo of the book in the box it shipped in, because it's too heavy to lift out easily. It features an image of a diatom that looks like a leaf, banana, or pea pod, I dunno.

The cover reads:

Team of #HZDR & #CNRS explains how #diatoms interact with #uranium. As algae can be the starting point for the accumulation of harmful substances in the food chain, the results help to better understand the impact of the release of uranium on natural cycles.

When we think of #nutrients that limit #algae growth, it is usually nitrogen or phosphorus, which is absolutely true, but occasionally, other factors become important. One is hydrated silica dioxide, which is necessary for #diatoms to produce their glass "frustule" shells. In both lakes and oceans, #silica can be drawn down to the point it prevents reproduction. So, in some locations "dissolved sand" can actually limit algal growth. #Science
