We just phenotyped 9 diatom species using the most advanced version of the Phenoplate yet: 384 samples measured at the same time!

When we think of #nutrients that limit #algae growth, it is usually nitrogen or phosphorus, which is absolutely true, but occasionally, other factors become important. One is hydrated silica dioxide, which is necessary for #diatoms to produce their glass "frustule" shells. In both lakes and oceans, #silica can be drawn down to the point it prevents reproduction. So, in some locations "dissolved sand" can actually limit algal growth. #Science

Did you know #diatoms are motile? These tiny glass cells have no cilia or flagella and a rigid body yet can glide on surfaces using a specialised slit in the cell wall called the raphe! What is the functional morphology of the raphe? All revealed in our new preprint www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

#Diatom phytochromes integrate the underwater light spectrum to sense depth: Carole Duchêne et al. nature.com/articles/s41586-024

"These photoreceptors enable them to detect changes in the light spectrum in the water column, thereby providing information regarding their vertical position within it."

Protein shell discovery reveals how #diatoms capture CO₂ so effectively phys.org/news/2024-10-protein-

"diatom pyrenoids are encased in a lattice-like protein shell... not only gives the pyrenoid its shape, but it helps create a high CO2 concentration in this compartment. This enables Rubisco to efficiently fix CO2"

Protein shell discovery reveals how #diatoms capture #CO₂ so effectively
Using #photosynthesis, they absorb large amounts of #CO2 and convert it into nutrients that feed much of #ocean life. Researchers discovered a protein shell that plays a key role in the diatoms' CO2 fixation. Using cutting-edge imaging technologies such as cryo-electron tomography, researchers were able to reveal molecular architecture of so-called #PyShell protein sheath and decipher its function.

Did you know?

Raphid #diatoms are one of the few eukaryotes that can glide! And they do it surprisingly... rap(h)idly! 🏎️ Congrats to Davutoglu et al. for their fascinating Nature #paper on the #molecular secrets behind this movement. Glad SequenceServer could help! 🌟
