i do not need the management part as i do it with digikam, i search one, when i want to see my picture i already managed.

While I'm still arguing with myself whether or not I should switch my entire #photo workflow from #DigiKam editor to #Darktable / #Gimp for the 32bit float reasons… (there are also good reasons not to do so)

… I find myself liking the JPEG previews that #AdobeDNGconverter renders. (I use it in #Wine.)

I often use these JPEG previews alone. They can be extracted on the command line with dcraw -e.

The #RAW files of my #PanasonicGH6 are still not supported by the tools on my system, and since this is #Ubuntu #Linux and its beliefs, it is hard to get new major versions of your tools without getting a new OS entirely.

ORF-RAW from #Olympus camera looks exactly the same in Darktable or in Digicam as it does with #DNG in between. #Adobe does have a point here.

#digikam is it possible to monitor just *one* folder?

I have a process and all photos and videos come into a single incoming folder.

I don't need it monitoring my whole library.

EDIT: I guess I *could* make a collection just for that one folder.... hmmm

EDIT EDIT: Nope. Monitoring is all or nothing.

I congratulate the #digiKam developers on finally getting the face recognition to only care about the important parts.

I really love #DigiKam. However, since #Gimp has learned 32bit float colors, I miss that in the DigiKam photo editor. I am tempted to open #RAW / #DNG in Gimp, which is then automatically stuffed into #Darktable for conversion.

The magic of floating point pixels isn't the huge color dynamics, it is that if you should happen to edit parts of the picture into over-exposure, you can easily get it back without damage in later steps.

#Lightworks, the #NLE / video editor I use, has set 32bit float to default for video.

Wie kann ich bei #Digikam 8.8.0 mit der #Stapelverarbeitung Bilder in Unterverzeichnisse nach Jahr und Monat verschieben? Früher ging das. Jetzt soll das aus Datenschutzgründen wohl irgendwie / irgendwo deaktiviert worden sein. Aber wo kann man das aktivieren oder nachinstallierten?

The Pleiades 2.0

This is a second attempt at post-processing the Pleiades star cluster (M45). This time, I took more time to learn #Siril and added #GraXpert for background extraction and denoising.

The data are the same as in the previous attempt, so you can see how important post-processing is in astrophotography. Fine details are not visible, as the data do not contain enough information, but to my taste, this version is much improved.

I am still very impressed with what is achievable with a standard DSLR, a fast lens, and a standard tripod.

A photo of the Pleiades, a very bright star cluster visible in the night sky even under heavy light pollution. The main stars of the cluster are surrounded by bluish nebulae. The rest of the image displays many stars and gray and reddish nebulae. Neither the nebulae nor most of the stars are visible to the naked eye.

Comet 2025 A6 Lemmon

The conditions on Sunday (19.10.2025) were good, so I drove out to photograph the comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon. It was only visible in the camera and not to the naked eye.

This image is a composite of the comet, stars, background without stars, and the foreground. Except for the foreground, the image was created from 171 frames (14 minutes and 15 seconds of exposure) using #Siril, including #StarNet. Post-processing and final composition were done in #GIMP.

Milky Way Section

A section of the Milky Way from 118 images (9 minutes 50 seconds exposure time). I played around with the #StarNet integration in #Siril to bring out the structure of the Milky Way independently from the stars.

After lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth, I moved some 20k+ photos from #shotwell to #digikam, all on #openbsd. And love it! Face tags, globe location, it has it all. And after some intense scripting to bridge between exif and #inaturalist with a custom queue plugin, I have full species classification as well. Just tag with the taxon identifier and the system does the rest.
