@azonenberg I buy 6 figures from #DigiKey annually. Not a fan of the QFN but we use them. Recently made a commitment to Renesas parts that are QFN. We design and load our own boards. Not doing BGA.

That said I really miss the yellow TI logic datasheet books from the 70s. Those were like the Sears catalog for me back in the day. Must be a collectors thing now. Would love to have those on my bookshelf. Daydreaming...

Need to do a lot more of that these days, eh?

Yes, you take your chances - there's the occasional outright scam, or so-so quality parts (like the ones that inspired me to write this), but you go into it with your eyes open. You take a chance because it's dirt cheap.

And 90% of the time, the parts are just fine.

For anything important, or safety-related, or mains-connected, or anything I build for other than personal use, I won't use yum-cha parts like this. For those, I order good name-brand parts from a reputable supplier (Newark/Element14/RS, DigiKey, etc).

But for hobbyists just having fun, messing around? AliExpress and friends are an absolute godsend. You can now get into hobby electronics for practically nothing, and build stuff and see if you like it.

There's a place for quality parts, and a place for cheap parts. Knowing which is which isn't hard.

Three cheers for cheap components!

when designing electronics usually you have a huge choice of what component to choose. see the example URL with 25k models of "switching voltage regulators", then you limit down by your electronic parameters, then by your mechanical parameters (size) and finally maybe by price.
since the recent weeks I also start to filter by company/manufacturer, and I start researching whether a company is american or not, and I learn a lot.
I am certain I am not the only one trying to boycott US products, but it would be interesting to see the real numbers from #mouser , #digikey and others. they have the numbers from the search queries.
oh, and they're US-based.

Supposedly, they have been having problems with prepaid orders for months now and process them manually. But they don't have the needed capacity to process all orders. So I now wait until they have enough capacity. The rep couldn't tell me when that'll be. Why didn't they tell me on the ordering page: "We're experiencing problems, bank transfer may take way longer than you'd expect".

Thanks #DigiKey, this lack of communication didn't make it better at all.

#DigiKey has lost me as a customer today. I've ordered twice and both times, I paid in front with a realtime bank transaction. And both times I had to contact the customer support twice. At least. And it took over a week between them receiving the money and them acknowledging that they've received the money. And there were 1.5 months between these orders. This can't be as I cannot trust Digikey anymore which is really unfortunate. Let's see what they'll do with my second order.

Or do I need a "quarantined" web session that I then toast? Or use #tails ? Or have I not understood? Why is this so hard? #digikey is a superb supplier of #electronics parts but it does not like my #protonvpn #adblocker I think a site should never have the right to do this. I do not mind adverts as such, but the tech they want to apply on the site is vastly more than mere "adverts". #Enshitification So do I need a proxy fall-back for when #vpn is off ?
