It's hard to see when you start out, but the advertisers are not here, the profit incentive is not here, the influencers and crypto bros are not so much here, in other words its not the best spot to sell your wears and gain attention.
And as a result theres more space for community and care and fun.

Corporate social media feels so alive and buzzy when you first open it up. But their algorithm is deceptive, they withhold likes, seek to titilate and anger you, its not real engagement with real friends.
Community social media, feels sooo boring and dead when you start. But what there is here, is space.
Space to be and create and do weird quirky stuff, just for you and ur mates.

You may wondering what it is were doing on here, on this little quiet social media platform. Well it's about reclaiming our power, individally, together and in community.
Big tech is co-opting and censoring what we say. The automatic feed they provide, while exciting, is really really dangerous for us, they are choosing your diet of information and misinformation.
Mastodon, by comparison feels so old-timey, like organic veggies.

This is a strange one to try to explain, especially to non tech folk, but while big tech for sure have abusive levels of power, the developer community (“All the programmers” if you will), also have power. And can quickly back and move away from products and approaches. I see this dynamic at play in this news that Google has backed off from trying to dominate their open source community run competitor, Nextcloud.
There’s other reasons and stuff going on, but tech folk still have power in these systems and there’s very much an agreed right way and wrong way to “dominate the competition”.
In 2025 Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is alive and well, and is a bit of an ongoing source of practical hope, despite any drawbacks and flaws.
