#directories

It also reminds me that I once worked on a #scholarly #directory early in my career. In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king! The volume of traffic was huge because, at that time, curated content was highly valued; the alternatives were inadequate. The good old days!

Ahhh, directories -- they were great, for a time, weren't they? And tapped into users' inability to formulate unknown item queries, something that browsing often resolves.

Have spent the last few days really cleaning up my Digital Music cloud and backup.
Quite organised now.
There are many other sub-levels under the _* directories.
This work was done entirely on 2 terminals: pCloud cloud storage and local backup hard drive.

[ Update: solution linked @ bottom ]

I could use help, here.

Windows 10, I have a directory where OBX Studio saves its screencap videos. There are 813 videos in it now - clips. The windows View is set to Detail and its listed in reverse chronological date order.

Every time I open this directory lately, I see a vid from 2023 at the top (a couple hundred more recent videos not listed) and Windows performs this index or some such -- the green bar slowly marches across the path / breadcrumb bar in the window, taking about 3-5 minutes to finish. Only at the end of this do I see the latest videos at the top.

Every time I open this window. After reboots, etc. Every time.

Is Windows 10 not able to handle a directory with 813 items in it all at once without reindexing or whatever it's doing? Is there a way to shortcut this, other than deleting some of the videos?

System is a Ryzen 7 7700X 4.5GHz, 32GB RAM, and the "disk" is an SSD. Thanks.

When considering what lies beneath, what is your preferred means of discovery?

I dunno why this suddenly seemed to be my favorite, and I muse,
"Why haven't you been doing that all along [, Jackass!]?"

I've been using autojump for a couple of days and really like it. This is a small Unix utility to navigate in directories that you visit frequently.
In my case, I usually cd in ~10-20 different directories all the time. It's a pain to have to write the entire directory path all the time. Autojump lets you jump to one of those directories, addressed by keyword.

You see it in action below. "j" is the short cut for autojump.

it's been a while since i've gushed about the 32-bit cafe's massive resources list for the personal web, so i'll take the opportunity now!

we often try to find where the needs are for the resources list, and i noticed lots of folks asking across mastodon about where the #web directories and listings went, so i asked our community to collaborate on a list, and we found the answer was a *lot*!

browsing the independent web is getting easier every day. it's so exciting to see how this side of the web continues to grow!

keep an eye on our resources list in case you need more for building your own #website and being an active participant in the personal web :)

I'm in the process of learning about and how to use and .

As a I started with on Windows with its subsystem and I'm kinda baffled by the fact that official docs, getting-started-guides, reputable and even advanced courses pay no attention to , file system structures and physical locations.

Putting everything in user home directory is just the norm? Just clone every repo on your main drive? Please tell me I'm wrong.
