My sketchy-looking diy-nas in my grandmother's basement

For anyone who is interested, here is the Hardware I used:

  • Intel Core i5 3rd gen
  • 2 GB DDR3 RAM, salvaged from an old HP Prebuilt
  • 120 GB SSD attached via USB
  • 4 Samsung HDDs (2x 1TB 2x 2TB) borrowed from an old NAS
  • Sketchy PSU also stolen from the HP
  • 3D-Printed case, screwed on a piece of wood, because top-heavy (l.eike.in/3q)
  • 3D-Printed HDD holder (l.eike.in/lv2)
  • D1-mini & relay to turn on remotely

Just built this sophisticated #NAS 🥸✨

So I replaced my #Proxmox fleet of mini PCs with a powerful #TrueNAS I built myself and have something to say.

Sometimes #Docker is the only option to #selfhost a service. And with Proxmox it will be a double virtualization - Docker inside a VM or LXC.

Sometimes you need the same storage attached to several services.

With TrueNAS you have no issues with that. You can have some services in Docker, some in LXCs and some in VMs. You can attach the same storage at least to Docker and LXC. TrueNAS is so much better for the #homelab than Proxmox. IMHO at least.

I still have Proxmox for public services like the blog and Gitea.

SAS controller in my #TrueNAS was not fixed properly. It was holding only by PCIe slot and a wire giving me anxiety. Because the card itself was small enough for the #Jonsbo N1, but it’s backplate was huge.
I finally found a low-profile plate from another card and it fitted almost perfectly! No more anxiety because of unfixed hardware.

Almost forgot to add this performance boost to my #Jonsbo N1 DIY NAS.

I think I can conclude that #TheGRATEmigration11 was successful. #TrueNAS with *arr stack is up and running. My iso images are re-downloading, #Plex transcoding performance is amazing.

I need to migrate some services from a mini PC to TrueNAS. I also need a reverse proxy for them. I also meed to set up a backup solution for TrueNAS… There is still a lot to do. As usual in the #homelab

But now I rest. I #vacation and #Diablo IV. I also #beer and #snacks. Stay tuned.

The PSU for my #DIYNAS finally arrived and I’ve put everything together. Ready for the first launch. My biggest concern is HBA SAS controller. Will it work? I have total of seven storage drives connected. Hope to see them all in BIOS setup.
Hope I’ll be able to get to the BIOS setup ))

Using a usual "tries and fails" method, I figured out that to restore an entire system backup to #Synology NAS, you need the exact amount of the same drives you had when doing a backup.

It turns out that #Backblaze backups were not excessive.

So now my #SynologyNAS is fully restored on SSD drives without 3rd party packages and works faster than ever.

And the #PSU delivery is delayed, so my #TrueNAS #DIYNAS is still unfinished.

My wife started to suspect that we don't have a #Plex server currently. Send help.

Drives inside the Jonsbo N1 are sliding up and down the rails with rubber rings (wheels?). That’s so cool!

That was tough, but I made it.
Connected SATA cables to the backplate of #Jonsbo N1. Three of them will go to the motherboard, and the other two are connected to the HBA SAS controller (it’s on the second photo at the bottom of motherboard).

I also fucked up with the RAM. Pangoly.com didn’t say anything, but my motherboard supports DDR5, and I chose DDR4.
So my #TheGRATEmigration11 is postponed, and my future #TrueNAS looks like this now.
#pcbuilding is hard when you don’t read everything about every piece of hardware chosen.

Fuck, I need “90 degree right angle SATA cables” for Jonsbo N1 =(

So I needed to connect 6 SATA drives. My PSU had 3 SATA power connectors and 2 Molex connectors. So I bought Molex->2xSATA power adapters.
Guess what? The backplate of the Jonsbo N1 is powered by 2 Molex connectors.

You can't have too many backups, right?

I'm preparing to replace all the drives in my Synology NAS. It will have small SSD drives only for the family cloud—photos and files.

All huge HHDs will go to my future TrueNAS. It's still #TheGRATEmigration11

I’ll need to connect 6 SATA drives to the motherboard with 4 SATA ports and a power supply with 3 SATA power connectors )))

There are no issues with power, because I just need to use Molex-to-SATA power adapters.

It is more complicated with data ports. I’ll need an HBA SAS controller for everything to work properly without writing my own drivers ))

First hardware arrived. Nice 2.5 to 3.5 drive adapters from Hewlett Packard for my future DIY NAS with TrueNAS Scale.
