In Boston Common last weekend waiting to march in our protest, I spotted this memorial for Alexei Navalny up against a tree. The tree is protected with a lot of thin slats of wood wrapped around the base. A photo card with Navalny's picture is there that says "Don't Give Up" in English and I presume Russian. Another small black and white photo at the base of the tree says 1976-2024. Another photo says Alexei Navalny Patriot A Memoir (I think it's the book cover).

Adjacent to the tree are some plastic battery operated candles that are flickering. About 2 dozen bunches of flowers, now frozen overnight, rest in the hard packed snow beneath all the photos. Pink ones, roses, yellow daisies, more roses, purple mums, orange mums, baby's breath, others I can't identify.

I’m neither Catholic, Christian, French, nor Belgian but I still celebrate La Chandeleur, or Candlemas. In France and Belgium, this day is traditionally marked with pancakes because, as Wikipedia puts it, “their round shape and golden color, reminiscent of the solar disc, refer to the return of spring after the dark and cold of winter.”
As I recently learned, the longing for light in the Northern Hemisphere begins as early as November. It starts with St. Martin’s Day on November 11, when children walk the streets with lanterns, bringing warmth into the darkness. This is followed by the glow of Christmas lights, the winter solstice, and the ultimate joy of knowing the days are growing longer again.
This cycle of light finds its conclusion today - at Candlemas. The light is on its way. And in times like these, we all need that hope, that reassurance that brighter days will return.
Even though I’m German, I’m far too French at heart to skip this tradition. Besides, pancakes are simply the best Sunday breakfast ever!
