Took this photo 4 years ago, framing the horsey knocker and the hands. Since then, they’ve repainted the door, but left the hands graffiti (I’m glad to say)! The north door of Durham Cathedral, city of Durham, England.
The rather wonderful door knocker is a replica of the original which dates from the 1100s and is in the Cathedral museum. It is a sanctuary knocker or sanctuary ring; anyone grasping it could claim sanctuary (asylum) from their enemies/accusers for 37 days. More info in the close-up alt text.

A close-up of the door knocker. Called a 'hellmouth' it is said to represent a lion devouring a man (?) The ring, which was grasped by the supplicant, is fashioned as a snake.

The large iron doorknocker on the eastern door to Forchtenstein Castle, Austria. It is an impressively grim place, as suggested by the heads on the knocker. May 2025.

A cute little door from one of the side streets in the centre. It's a very narrow street and a very narrow door! You don't often see green doors around here, so it does stand out! There's a close-up of the horse door knocker too! ✨

I'm no horse anatomist but a fetlock is essentially a horse ankle. Thanks to the Eurovision contestants Fr. Ted and Fr. Dougal for the inspiration. 🎶
