Portland Bill, Dorset

Barely noticed to begin with but we have two species growing together here: Golden Samphire - Inula crithnoides (mostly in the centre) and Rock Samphire - Crithmum maritimum (mostly to the left and right). Although they share a common name and both are highly edible, they belong to different families: Daisy and Carrot, respectively.

In the centre is a bright green plant with fleshy narrow leaves clasping the stem and a few all-yellow, daisy-like flowers fully out but with more to come. Either side but intermingled is another plant with fleshy, more glaucous, leaves that project like fingers. It also has yellow flowers in umbels but they are barely out at this time.

Once again our warmest day of the year here in #Dorset with a high of 30.7°C.
There are now some interesting lines of #Altocumulus #castellanus (Ac cas) building from the SW signalling change ahead.

Glorious day visiting fascinating Portland Bill, Dorset, where ghosts of the former industry of stone quarrying still linger. A huge quay was hewn from the rock that today is steadily falling away. The hoist that once lowered blocks of Portland Stone into vessels below stands rusting but still in use to lower fishing boats into the sea.

A view out to sea showing a flattish area of stone, once the quay. Two parts of the edge have fallen off into the sea after being undermined by the waves. The sea and the sky are blue.Looking out from the land to the sea, at the edge is an iron hoist silhouetted against the blue sea.In the foreground is a cliff shaped as a quay in the past but eroded away in places.A view from the cliff to fishing boats and sheds above. One boat is painted white and the other black with 'Bill Boys' on the side. The sheds are painted different colours. In the forefront is an area covered with patches of low-growing salt-loving plants.

Well, after a few hours of brewing, I thought I'd have a beer that I'm hoping will be similar to my brew.

Cranborne Poacher - Ruby Ale - 5.7%

By Badger - because they have musteline ales in Dorset apparently...

We have a brown beer bottle next to a pint of brown, ruby ale. The bottle has a pink label showing
an anthropomorphic magpie with a cap, jacket and necklaces. He's holding a gold ring in his beak. The label reads 'Badger Cramborne Poacher - Ruby Ale - 5.7% - rich and fruity with damson and liquorice notes.'

One of many visits to Lyme Regis over the years for #MeerMittwoch today and this was from 2014.

Lyme Regis is famous for fossils and if you've not heard of its famous 19th century resident Mary Anning then she's well worth you reading up about her.

It's a sunny, windy day here on the coast. We're on one side of a bay looking across the sea to where the mainland emerges from the left and disappears into the distance on the horizon to the far right. It's a coastal landscape of cliffs with a sharply undulating ridge and grass lining its top while the sheer faces near the water are chalky white with just discernible geological layers of other colouration present. Directly in front of us is a small section of pebbled beach filling the bottom left of the scene, with an old stone wall ahead and a newer, higher wall to our left heading along the beach area to meet the older part. The pebbles are light-coloured near the wall where the water hasn't reached them while a line of black seaweed marks the boundary where the surf is rolling up and soaking the stones nearer the sea. The water's surface is choppy, foaming as it breaks on the pebbles, and it's brown-blue and murky here where it looks to have churned up a lot of sand and silt. Plenty of large, puffy white clouds form layers over the distant cliffs but there's lots of vibrant blue sky to be seen too.

Here's a wider shot of a southern marsh, with (surprise, surprise) Southern Marsh Orchids. Oh, and cotton grass, naturally. When I spot a bit of bog like that, can't resist getting into the squelchy bits for a closer look.
