The image is a black-and-white photograph depicting an individual seated on what appears to be the porch of a rural wooden structure. The person, whose gender and race are not specified in this description but likely reflect traditional African descent based on context clues from visual cues such as hairstyle, dress, and setting, sits with one leg crossed over the other, hands clasped near their lap.

They wear loose-fitting clothing that seems worn yet comfortable for labor-intensive work. The ground is strewn with large quantities of tobacco leaves, which are spread out in piles around them, indicating a process related to agriculture or processing crops. These actions suggest this person might be engaged in the task of grading and sorting cured tobacco leaves.

Behind the seated individual stands a wooden chair that exudes an aura of rustic simplicity, reinforcing the rural setting. The background is composed primarily of wood planks, showing signs of weathering which contribute to the authenticity of the environment as one where hard labor is performed on daily basis. In terms of mood and atmosphere, this image conveys a sense of endurance and industriousness within modest surroundings.

There's also text overlaid at the top left corner that reads "1938," indicating the photograph may have been taken during that year or represents an event from that period. The specif [...]

Bonus Photo of the Day 4 4th January 2026.

HB-IRN (fake registration), Douglas DC-3, in SwissAir colours, on display at the base of the Besucherhügel (Visitors Hill) at Munich Strauss Airport, 30th September 1996.
A Junkers JU-52/3m in pre-World War 2 Luft Hansa livery, and the tail of a Lockheed Constellation in post-WW2 Lufthansa colours can also be seen.
I previously saw this with the fake registration N569R on the terraces at Frankfurt Airport in 1993.
The actual HB-IRN is on display at the Swiss transport Museum in Luzerne where I saw it in 1989.
That plane operated the first commercial flights from Switzerland to my home airport, Manchester, in 1948!

Front side view of a World War 2-era twin propellor-engined airliner parked on grass facing slightly to the left of the camera, on display as part of a museum exhibit.
The plane is in a barely metal livery, either small "SwissAir" titles on the nose, larger, blocky "Swiss Air Lines" titles on the upper fuselage above the passenger cabin windows, and the large, black registration "HB-IRN" on the sides of the rear fuselage.
The tail is in the same bare metal, with a wide red stripe at the top, containing a large white cross.
The plane is casting a strong black shadow on the grass beneath it, suggesting the sun is almost directly overhead.
A bare metal and black, 3 propellor-engined airliner of similar vintage is in the background on the left, partially hidden by this plane, with the white, blue, and yellow tail of another plane in the top right corner.
Grey buildings in the distance meet bright but hazy sky.

The image depicts a person seated on an old-fashioned wooden porch swing, engaged in the task of grading cured tobacco leaves. The setting appears to be rural with aged wooden structures suggesting a historical or traditional context for this activity. A pile of freshly harvested and dried tobacco leaves is visible next to where they are being sorted by hand.

The black-and-white photo provides a sense of nostalgia, possibly indicating it was taken in the late 19th century based on its style. The person appears focused on their work, sorting through what looks like aged or weathered material, likely from previous seasons' harvests given the state and volume present.

This scene is reminiscent of historical photographs that document agricultural practices, particularly related to sharecropping during a time when such methods were common in farming communities across America. The image may be associated with Georgia as it suggests proximity to Douglas, known for its tobacco industry heritage.

The image depicts a Black woman sitting outdoors, possibly in an older rural setting. She is seated on the porch of what appears to be a wooden house or barn with simple and weathered architecture. The woman's expression seems contemplative as she works with large amounts of tobacco leaves spread out before her on the ground.

She wears casual clothing consisting of a white top paired with light-colored pants, indicative of practical attire for manual labor in warm climates. Her bare feet suggest a lack of formal footwear suitable for hard work or indoors. The surrounding environment includes wooden chairs and more stacked tobacco leaves, indicating an ongoing agricultural processing activity likely related to tobacco farming.

The monochromatic tone of the photograph suggests it was taken during early days when color photography might not have been common or practical in such settings due to economic constraints on rural communities.

This image is a part of Dorothea Lange's body of work capturing everyday lives and struggles, particularly within marginalized groups. The text implies she had time for simple pleasures like raising something edible despite her circumstances, hinting at resilience amidst hardship.

Douglas, Georgia. The "golden leaf," already graded by the farmers, sorted and wrapped in "tobacco sheets," rolls into town to the warehouse where the auctions are held every year

#Douglas #Georgia #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177711

A black and white photograph shows several individuals gathered around a large pile of sacks, which appear to be filled with agricultural products. The sack are stacked in neat rows on what looks like the backside of an open cart or wagon. In front of these stacks, there is one individual wearing casual clothing, including shorts and a cap, who appears engaged in some activity related to handling the items. To their right stands another person dressed in lighter-toned short-sleeved attire with dark pants, also interacting with something out-of-frame.

In the background, more individuals can be seen engaging in various activities, possibly loading or unloading goods from similar carts. The scene suggests a busy work environment, likely related to agriculture and commodity handling during an era when such manual labor was common for transportation of goods before mechanized vehicles were widely used.

The photograph is labeled with handwritten text at the bottom left corner that reads "18JUL-E," which could indicate the date on which this photo was taken or it might be a reference code. The overall composition and attire of individuals hint towards an early to mid-20th-century setting, possibly linked to rural agricultural practices in areas like Douglas, Georgia as referenced by one source (https://images.loener.nl/DorotheaLange/full/6495/6495b7a7ba25398d90c4ef20.jpg). Near Douglas, Georgia. Sharecroppers grade the cured leaves on the porches and sort them to go to the tobacco auction

#Douglas #Georgia #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177711

This black-and-white photograph captures a moment on what appears to be a porch of a rural dwelling. On the left, an adult woman and child stand together; they wear dresses indicative of mid-20th-century fashion. The woman is partially obscured by curtains that hang in front of large window panes with wooden frames.

In the center sits another figure, likely male based on clothing and hairstyle, who looks down at a stack of what could be leaves or some form of paper spread across his lap; these items are strewn about on the floor to his right. His attire is more casual, consisting of short-sleeved shirt and shorts.

On both sides of this central figure, piles resembling tobacco residue lie haphazardly against structures—these might indicate a process related to processing or sorting crops commonly found in agricultural contexts such as those surrounding Georgia's Near Douglas area where sharecroppers are mentioned.

Douglas, Georgia. Farmers at tobacco auction. Common question is "What will it bring this year?"

#Douglas #Georgia #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177711

The image shows a group of five men, likely farmers or laborers, gathered on the porch of what appears to be an old wooden building. The scene is black and white, suggesting it was taken in the past, possibly during the early 20th century.

Four of the men are standing while one sits with his legs crossed holding a cane. They all wear hats, overalls or trousers, work boots, and shirts typical of rural laborers from that era. One man is looking down at another who appears to be in need of assistance as he leans on a wooden railing for support.

The building behind them has several boarded-up windows with visible glass panes reflecting their surroundings. The overall atmosphere conveys a sense of camaraderie and concern among the men, possibly discussing labor or fieldwork topics typical during agricultural seasons.

At the bottom left corner, there is text "18J02-E" which could be an archive reference number for this particular photograph.

Douglas, Georgia. South Georgia tobacco sharecropper in town for auction. Note tobacco sheets in which he brought tobacco from the farm

#Douglas #Georgia #SouthGeorgia #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177710

The image depicts a vintage, black and white photograph of three individuals standing near an old vehicle. The setting appears to be rural or agricultural with brick structures in the background.

In the foreground, there is a man dressed in overalls and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. He has a mustache and sports a confident smile while holding onto another person's shoulder, possibly for support as he stands tall beside them.

Beside him, slightly smaller due to perspective, is a young boy who also wears overalls with stars on the pockets. The child appears happy or content, standing close but not touching the man next to him.

In the background, partially obscured by the vehicle and other figures, another person can be seen raising their hand as if waving or signaling something. This individual's expression is less visible due to perspective.

The truck in the scene has a load of what appears to be linens on its roof rack, suggesting that they may have traveled with belongings for relocation or perhaps returned from work. The vehicle itself seems aged and well-used but still operational.

Overall, this image evokes a sense of historical rural life, possibly connected to labor such as agriculture due to the attire worn by the individuals and the context provided in the accompanying text about South Georgia tobacco sharecroppers auctioning their harvests.
