I believe this is a Blue Dasher dragonfly on a dried rush bloom in the pond this warm Tuesday afternoon.

A Blue Dasher dragonfly is perched on a yellow brown near vertical stalk of a rush plant. Old, dried blooms of the rush are on stems below the insect.

After watching this twelve-spotted skimmer dragonfly zip around at lightspeed for minutes without landing, I finally got it after it landed on this dried out rosemary bush.

It kind of looks like it's drinking from a straw, lol.

In my quest for #butterflies, I often see other things. I couldn’t resist sharing these guys. #frogs #dragonflies

The highlight of last weekend was the #dragonfly population at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. Good numbers of both Scarce Chaser and Norfolk Hawker, both of which are relatively restricted in distribution across the UK. Didn't expect to see the two species sharing a single stick to perch on. #dragonflies #odonata #insects #invertebrates #UKWildlife #photography

Two dragonflies sitting on the same stick above a ditch. At the top is a blue and black one, a Scarce Chaser. Lower is a pale brown one with bright green eyes, a Norfolk Hawker (outside the UK this is called Green-eyed Hawker).

Y’all? Please recognize the beautiful moments in your life. Now more than ever it’s important to take care of ourselves, practice gratitude, breathe.

Last night I started watering & a bunch of huge came & played in the mist. While the sky was turning colors. And I saw an and people walking the cutest dogs.
It was a mindblowing moment 🙂

Glad I left my phone inside. Allowed me to experience the moment.

Pacific Spiketail (Zoraena dorsalis) females lay eggs by hovering above muddy stream edges and plunging their ovipositor up and down like a sewing machine—often in shady spots.

A Spoon-tailed Duskhawker (Gynacantha basiguttata) spotted at Rifle Range Nature Park, Singapore on 29 June 2025. It zoomed in across the path and perched on this plant. I cannot believe my luck, for this is a rarely seen crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) dragonfly that rest during the day, and hard to spot.

A large greenish dragonfly hanging vertically downwards from a plant. It has transparent wings and a dark abdomen with green spots and stripes. The abdomen is pinched where it meets the body and features a pair of elongated appendages at the tail.
👀 A dragonfly has not two but five eyes. The well-known two large eyes and three small, single eyes on top of its head 👁️.

I'm learning to photograph dragonflies. I'm no expert, but the secret seems to be wearing lots of mosquito repellent.

Happy to spot several males and a female Scarlet Pygmy (Nannophya pygmaea) at Rifle Range Nature Park, Singapore on 29 June 2025. At less than 2 cm in length, it is shorter than some damselflies.

A downy emerald and a brilliant emerald. Easy to get these two #dragonflies mixed up, especially just sightings of one or the other.

The brilliant, as the name suggests, is more shiny of the two. It's slightly more slender, and the thickest part is closer to the middle of the abdomen, whereas the downy appears more club-like, its abdomen thickest near the rear end. (The abdomen of the downy in the picture appears dented, but that's an abnormal property of this individual.)

If the brilliant happens to be a female (as is the case here), it's trivial to identify by the stiletto-like vulvar scale pointing downwards from the abdomen.
Downy emerald (Cordulia aenea) on a leaf (of a bog bilberry?). Copper-green body, light brown eyes. Rear end of the abdomen curves downward, with large dents on the side.Brilliant emerald (Somatochlora metallica) on a wooden stem (of a bog bilberry?). Shiny, metallic green body, blood-colored eyes.
