Guess who found a yellowjacket ground nest in their retaining wall today?

This gal!

Probably not a coincidence that a yellowjacket stung the shit out of me when we were building the wall, maybe 3 meters from this spot.

A newly rebuilt drystone walled section of road; Portobello Rd, Dunedin .At a guess 10 km, but a local may correct me. Well done to the stonemasons who dedicated their craft to lay stone ( instead of modern concrete shoring technique that has little character in comparison)
Sections of this harbour drive were widened as well for a cycle/ walkway. Can do a full circle by crossing the harbour on a small ferry and riding the trail to the city and back.

Is there a name for these little sheep gates in walls?
#Northumberland #DryStoneWall #DryStaneDyke

A drystone wall encloses a grassy field dotted with molehills. Above and behind it rise grassy and heathery hills. In the wall from the ground to about halfway up the wall is a square opening with a wooden gate blocking it.

Well that was most satisfying. Taking down a drystane wall and then rebuilding it .More fun than it sounds , and i came home with a couple of souvenirs.

In the dying minutes of , here's a pic featuring a few of the tremendous trees I saw in the Peak District, Derbyshire, during my short break there in May. This view was captured between Monsal Dale and Ashford in the Water.

A view across pasture fields divided by stone walls, with three large trees and some shrubs in the middle-distance, and more trees beyond. A few cottages can be glimpsed, and the pasture is grazed mainly by sheep, with cattle in one field further away.

Back to London after visiting Scotland, but realizing I haven't kept you fully posted. We found another broch near Dunvegan! They are so cool.

A knoll viewed across a boggy moor, its slopes covered with stones fallen from the once imposing tower. A human in a red coat is sloshing across the more to check it out.A curving stone wall, the original lower courses of the broch, with a small doorway to the outer wall. Inside is a small wild garden.

@KeithDJohnson. It’s a brilliant example. That’s a tall series of urbanite. It must have structural layers to anchor the urbanite to the natural slope. Is there salvaged materials behind what we can see? #drystonewall.

We visited the Dun Beag broch, an iron age roundhouse fort. Imagine having dry stonewall skills so good that your works still persist thousands of years later!

The bottom remains of a dry stonewall roundhouse at the top of a rocky knob of land, with short green grass and mosses and tufts of long brown grass from last year. It probably was originally 50 feet or so tall, but only the bottom 5 to 10 feet remain.Detail of the broch wall, painted in white and orange lichens, and showing how the large blocks of stone fit tightly together despite their irregular shapes, with the gaps chinked with smaller bits of stone.

Here's another one of my path series. This is called Along the Costal Path.

It is made up of a bunch of different elements I have seen, such as the fence and the stones.

A five colour screenprint of a coastal path winding over hills towards the sea. On the top of the hill on the left stands a tin mine. Next to the path is an old fence. In the foreground on the left is a dry stone wall and a white tree. In the background on the top right is the sea and a headland.

After my appallingly amateurish attempts to repair wind-damaged dry stone walls it is great to see a professional at work.

An old print today. This is Tin Mine from 2018, a three colour screenprint.

It's inspired by Cornwall (where are all the Cornish people on Mastodon?) and is quite abstract.

A three colour screenprint of Cornwall showing a tin mine, rock tor, fence, trees, a dry stone wall, gorse and a hare. It is quite an abstract print with details in the foreground and abstract shapes in the background mimicking hills.

This print is called Along the Coastal Path and is a five colour print.

It is not of a specific place but is from my imagination. In this print I really started to combine stylised elements with textures.

#cornwall #coast #path #fence #stonewall #drystonewall #sea #tinmine #grass #printmaking #print #handprinted #handmade #PrintmakersOfMastodon

A five colour screen print of a path which starts bottom right and then moves up the page on the left. In the bottom left corner is a white tree and a dry stone wall. In the top left is a tin mine on top of the hill. Beyond that is the sea which comes down to a cove on the right side of the page. On the top right is a headland. There is a white fence alongside the path. The print is in green, brown, cyan, dark grey and white.

There are certain spots in my garden that bring me so much joy.
I could sit and look at these Ferns for ages.
I imagine they lived in prehistoric times ...

Ferns growing out of a dry stone wall, unfurling their leaves. Stones covered with moss.
