👉 I haven't seen mama and papa muscovy family since Saturday (14th), and am hopeful they are exploring other nearby ponds 🙏🤞

Papa Muscovy, usually very reluctant to assist with parenting duties, here watches over the newborn ducklings whilst mama is off feeding in the pond. This pair uses the same nest location often, and this is the very first time I've witnessed papa involved with the ducklings.

#Ducklings day 3 adventures await 🐥

Many tiny baby muscovy ducklings gathered behind mama as they await another full day of adventures.

One of my favorite moments from our early June camping and fishing trip to Bucks Lake in Plumas County, CA: a mallard mom guiding her clutch through calm morning waters near Mill Creek. The light was perfect, the water was still, and this little duckling swimming close by gave me one of my favorite frames from the trip.

It’s clear the birds here are used to human activity—maybe a bit too much so—but witnessing these families thrive was a true joy.

I took an early June camping and fishing trip (note, I never said “catching trip”) with my son to Bucks Lake in Plumas County, California. One of the highlights of the trip for me was just how many waterfowl babies we saw as we cruised around the lake. The mallards and Canada geese had a quite successful year at hatching a great many offspring, including some fairly large clutches.
We took a short boat ride on the morning we broke camp and spotted a momma mallard with one of those large clutches near the mouth of Mill Creek in some nice warm early light. People in boats quite obviously feed them (unfortunately), so they fairly quickly got closer to our boat than I’d have liked for my 100–400mm lens, so I struggled to get the whole group in a frame. However, I thought this shot of one of the little ones swimming right next to mom in the calm water was worthy of the “keeper” list.
