A love of heavenly beauty does not preclude
A proper love for earthly pulchritude.

I am still so, so happy with my #earthly setup that runs linters, formatters, and tests locally, in pre-commit hooks, and on GitHub Actions. It's made it so easy to implement more complex checks and enable others to run them with ease. 🤩 https://www.jdno.dev/pushing-earthly-to-the-limit/
Heute 2 Schritte weg von Github geschafft:
Finished back panel! I will look for my foam tiles to wet block to confirm it measures to the schematic; then block by machine wash warm and tumble dry when sweater is finally assembled, I made a size bigger (xl instead of lg so if it shrinks 10% it should still fit.) Is that the procedure for a linen/cotton/viscose sweater? Thanks #knitting #earthly #erikaknight #alwaysgaugeswatch
I am knitting Earthly in Patons Linen (cotton, linen, viscose) and it’s my first time working with linen.
I was told, and everything I’m reading, and watching on YouTube emphasizes the importance of blocking my linen swatches. I hand washed in warm water with agitation, and am tumble drying now. After it’s dry, I’ll machine wash and dry the swatches like my son will when he’s living with the finished sweater. The swatches have become very soft, have grown a bit in length, but so far the width seems stable. Will see how second blocking goes. It’s going to be a very nice sweater if I can get the sizing right. Using the EZ PZ Gauge Ruler to measure, and the stitches were better defined after the first blocking.
Planning to make an XL (size 46” chest) depending on what happens with the swatches, since according to Google, yarn can be machine washed and tumbled dry, it may shrink up to 10%, (which would make the XL a 43.2” fit) BUT I had a bamboo ribbon yarn top shrink to child size in my washer (still sad about that, the pre wash size was perfect!) so I’m gun shy. RIP Coachella tank in Tahki Yarns Bali ribbon. I’d use that yarn again, but definitely wet block, and handwash (it got accidentally thrown into the washing machine)

Well, I've often wondered if what we see out there beyond our #earthly #sky are just the the #subatomic #particles of some bigger #universe that is in fact our own. In other words we exist in some #multi-dimensional inversion of the sub-atomic particles that our physicists talk about in #quantum #theory.
I must get round to reading A Brief History Of Time and sort this all out for everybody.

I follow #earthly for years, and I really want to like it. But only building for Linux puts me off.
Impressive, since switching from gitlab-ci to earthly, pipeline runs with container builds went from >20 minutes down to 3-8 minutes.
What a little bit of better caching can do for you.
It's no longer fully self-hosted, but earthly is trivial to self-host if I want to bother at some point.
And given earthly hands out 6000 CI minutes for free, it actually cuts cost compared to starting a VM on hetzner or locally.
So, the first few minutes are invested, there is an image build: https://quay.io/repository/shivering-isles/ente-server?tab=tags
Using Earthly for my quite standardised build contianer image pipeline made that wonderfully easy: https://git.shivering-isles.com/shivering-isles/infrastructure-gitops/-/blob/930504303deebbcf2245259857d0deeb8f6f410a/images/ente-server/Earthfile
The GitHub "actions/runner-images" project has been insisting they are just sticking with "LTS" #PowerShell for a year now.
PowerShell 7.4 GA is out and is the new LTS release.
https://github.com/actions/runner-images/issues/8847
Since 7.2 doesn't expire until November, my bet is they not do anything for several months, at least.
Anyone betting against me?
P.S. I'm using #earthly in my builds, so I can build and test with the versions of #PowerShell I want to support.
I've been building stuff using #earthly in the past few days so much, that using regular docker files feels a bit clunky.
Earthly isn't perfect, there is much left desired and I come across some bugs in the basics from time to time, but when it comes to caching and making actual use of multi-staged builds it's so much nicer to use than Dockerfile. Especially with the ability to use multiple files and cross reference them. (with great power comes great responsibility applies of course.)
This was an interesting read, even though I'm usually not interested in the business side of tech things.
A nice post mortem on why this idea failed, even though the individual parts are amazing.
I myself stumbled upon Earthly and am still very in love with what it does. So far I haven't replaced any of my build systems with it, mainly because I'm afraid of driving potential contributors away, if I force them to install a tool they have never heard of.
