"The closer a volcano is to erupting, the greener the trees around it look from space" by @LiveScience - Actually only in limited and rare conditions, if a volcano produces the right amount of CO2 for trees to photosynthesize. As was detected in some locations recently, satellites can see increased tree growth. But this doesn't include cases like Mammoth Mountain CA which pushed out so much CO2 that it killed a stand of trees. livescience.com/planet-earth/v #EarthSciences #satellite #geology #volcano

International Polar Year (Earth sciences 🌍)

The International Polar Years are collaborative, international efforts with intensive research focus on the polar regions. Karl Weyprecht, an Austro-Hungarian naval officer, motivated the endeavor in 1875, but died before it first occurred in 1882–1883. Fifty years later a second IPY took place.
