I went from 230 to 202 between when I started talking to the recruiter and when I shipped for basic training. I finished 10 weeks later at 185.

In Afghanistan, I would get as low as the mid 170s. On my frame, this looked distinctly unhealthy. I shot up to 215 after returning home and then spent the rest of my career fighting to keep below 200.

(I once asked a junior officer if it weren't likely that we caused #EatingDisorders in our people. He told me a little bit was probably healthy.)

Eating disorders are not just about food—they’re about control, identity, and the garbage rules society tries to sell you about what’s “healthy.”
And in 2025, those rules are everywhere: in “wellness” TikToks, gym influencer meal plans, and even brands that claim to be body positive while pushing calorie-restricting products.

I was looking for mental health screening tests that did not require collecting personal data.

Yesterday I found @divested has developed Kairoscope, website with dozens of questionnaires that run solely on your browser, zero data sent to anywhere else.

Two songs, two perspectives on the same silent battle. Nicole Dollanganger’s “Please Eat” voices the helpless bystander. Silverchair’s “Ana’s Song” sings from inside the spiral. Together, they speak to the haunting dissonance of eating disorders — between those who suffer and those who watch.

BBC: I quit TikTok to avoid eating disorder relapse. “TikTok recently blocked the search for the term but Eve Jones, 23, from Cardiff, said, despite it being a step in the right direction, it ‘scratches the surface’ on a larger issue – which people can find a way around. … Despite the ban, many videos promoting ‘skinnytok’ which do not use the hashtag are still available on the app.”
