4/4 In short, reach out, let your friends know they you are there for them. Be prepared to listen and if they tell you “white people are fucking crazy”, don't argue.
Acknowledge that they are right, but understand that they aren't talking about YOU (unless you are one of those crazy ones). Opting out of difficult conversations tells your friends that you are no friend to them and you might not realize how isolating that actually is.
3/ You might not like to hear what some of the things they have to say. You may think you’re not racist only to have some of your beliefs challenged as being racist.
That doesn't make you a bad person, it just means we live in a very racist society (since birth) and it would be unrealistic to NOT at least have some racist preconceived notions. The ability to change our minds when confronted with new information IS growth.
2/ They may not say anything, but your friends are watching you. They are taking note of your silence and evaluating whether you are to be trusted when shit truly hits the fan.
A lot of people are hurting right now. They are scared about the future and they need to know who their allies really are.
Reach out to them (if you haven't done so) and just listen. Don't opt out of the conversation. Let them know you truly care about them.
1/ Dear white people, if you are *not* checking in on your black and brown friends in the wake of the election and prefer to keep your collective heads in the sand, your friends might be better friends to YOU than you are to THEM.
Being able to opt out of difficult conversations about race is a level of privilege that your friends simply don't have. Peace and quiet are two vastly different things. Silence is NOT golden.
Harris did not loose the #election. The US did.
