Clarinescapade by Bobby Jaspar Quartet & Quintet, released on Fresh Sounds Records in 2007 but recorded in 1956.

Bobby Jaspar was a young Belgian tenor saxophonist and flautist who arrived in New York in April 1956. His reputation in Europe was considerable, but he was practically unknown in the States. Nonetheless, when trombonist J.J. Johnson engaged Bobby for his newly formed quintet, he finally achieved the recognition he deserved. From that moment on, he enjoyed great success, winning Down Beats critics poll award in the New Star Tenor Sax category during the summer of 1956.

These recordings were made on three dates during the fall of that same year. The music is varied in theme and mood, and Jaspar, as well as performing on tenor sax, clarinet and flute, displays a musical expression entirely his own, playing with a great deal of warmth and imagination...

Solid is an album by American jazz guitarist Grant Green, containing performances recorded in 1964 but not released on the Blue Note label until 1979. McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Bob Cranshaw from Green’s previous session are joined by alto saxophonist James Spaulding and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson.

The AllMusic review by Steve Huey stated: "Solid is a bright, hard-charging affair. There's a little modal jazz, but Solid's repertoire is chiefly complex hard bop, full of challenging twists and turns that the players burn through with enthusiasm. Green didn't tackle this kind of material — or play with this kind of group — very often, and it's a treat to hear him do so on both counts... one of Green's strongest jazz outings and a unique standout in his catalog" - Wikipedia

GG-CJB by The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band , released on MPS in 1979.

One of Europe’s most venerated band leaders, Swiss pianist-composer George Gruntz fronted small and large groups stacked with international jazz greats. This live GGCGB date is a dazzling example. All are internationally renowned jazz masters, many, such as long-time Mingus trombonist Jimmy Knepper, were innovators on their instruments; some, such as Americans drummer Elvin Jones, guitarist John Scofield, and trumpeter Woody Shaw are jazz legends. The compositions highlight Gruntz’s arranging skills and allow for a lot of open blowing. Destiny opens up with a propulsive Elvin Jones drum solo, followed by Scofield’s compelling play and Swiss musician Franco Ambrozetti’s luscious, warm flugelhorn..

McCoy Tyner Plays Ellington is the sixth album by American jazz pianist McCoy Tyner. It was recorded in December 1964 and released on the Impulse! label in 1965. It features performances by Tyner with his John Coltrane bandmates: bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. Percussionists Willie Rodriguez and Johnny Pacheco appear on four of the tracks. It would be Tyner's last effort for the label, before signing with Blue Note.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow states that "This is an excellent outing that displays both Tyner's debt to the jazz tradition and his increasingly original style" - Wikipedia

Elvin Jones - Coalition

Here's an example of a late-period hard bop album (mostly) that pushes right up against free jazz, or felt that way to me as it moved from structure to chaos and back.

I probably wasn't in the right mood when listening, so I'll have to revisit with I'm more focused and prepared for what's coming...

Elvin Jones - Coalition LP cover.

A very 70s looking cover, with a color picture of Elvin and his wife sitting on grass, centered at the bottom, and the artist and title above.

The black LP plays on a vintage, restored Bang & Olufsen Beogram 8002 linear-tracking turntable to the right.

East Broadway Run Down is an album by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins recorded in 1966 and released in 1967 by Impulse Records, his last album before industry pressures led him to take a six-year hiatus. The album represents one of his more notable experiments with free jazz, according to The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz illustrating "the furthest extent to which he incorporated noise elements into his playing". It has been critically described as among his 60s "jewels" - Wikipedia

Superb sounding session of the classic Coltrane quartet. It's as if Coltrane is playing in my room.

John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, 1965 on Impulse!

Accompanying Coltrane here are McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack in December 1964 but not released until 1965.

Arguably Coltrane’s masterpiece (perhaps second to Giant Steps?) and still one of his best selling albums (and platinum certified by RIAA). The chant of “a love supreme” during the opening phase “Acknowledgement” is Coltrane himself, apparently overdubbed 19 times – atypical for the kind of recordings Van Gelder was doing in the mid-sixties.

My copy is a 2021 reissue in orange vinyl – Impulse! orange – that was sold in multiple retailers (I got it via the uDiscover music online store owned by UMG).
