A small win for me tonight. I was able to convert my sister's decade-old #Haswell #Dell "gaming PC" from potential #ewaste into a box for playing #retrogame #emulators and #movies through the magic of #LinuxMint and #RetroArch. I had to swap out its broken RX 560 for a GT 1030 I had lying around but that was sufficient to play #tetris, #mariokart, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine with my spouse. Hopefully with a little tweaking I can get #steam running so we can play Lego Star Wars together.

I though it would be a good time to share an update on the little PS1 emulator I've been working on. It's getting there! :robot_grin:

At the moment, the drawing timing is now working correctly (vsync/vblank sort of fixed). Only a handful of polygon primitives have been implemented. Enough to get a result. Texture stretching isn't correct yet (hence a duplicated copy of the logo at the bottom) and the texture palette. Blitting isn't 100% correct on what’s implemented. Oh and the flipped view port.

CPU is 98% done. The virtual memory devices still need a bit of work. Only parts of the DMA, timers, interrupts and GPU have some functionality (and cdrom?).

Yeah there's still quite a few things left to-do. But progress is still progress. It's been the challenge I need right now to push my skill set in multiple directions. :blobhaj_witch:

I was delighted to discover today that there's a test suite of sorts for the PS1. :robot_grin:

Loaded up the some of the CPU test binaries into the emulator and saved the results (via the Zig testing tool).

Not a bad result :blobhaj_witch: with these being the only failing tests (so far), for something I haven't written tests for. (it's on the todo list and still is despite having these binaries available).

Unlike many Nintendo 64 games that use EEPROM (from 4 to 16 Kbit, depending on the format) which, consequently, limits the number of slots or amount of savable data, Rayman 2 (and Tonic Trouble, Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers and 30s other games) uses a more generous and economical (and also long-term) 32 KB SRAM. It was even faster and easier for developers to integrate. The official emulator on N. Switch Online (and also Virtual Console and many very old or very new unofficial emulators), if not supported by the emulator and not correctly set to that type of format and amount of memory to save game data, what happens? It generates corrupt .eep or .sav files, preventing from loading the progress, forcing to use quick saves as a temp solution and wait for Nintendo to fix it ASAP and stop, again and again, doing things sloppily.
