I am letting the students in my Cultures of the Environment seminar play "They are Hollows of Desolation" by Geordie Murphy gmurphy.itch.io/hollows The broader idea is to use #RPG / #boardgames as discussion starters about #environing #worldbuilding #simulation #crisis #disaster #globalchange and both #games and #environment as cultural objects. Let's see how it works out.

for my seminar "Cultures of the Environment" I am working towards student spending a session mapping an #environment of their choice, as a way to kickstart discussion about selective #representation and #mapping as #environing. Does anybody have suggestions for a reading to assign to students ahead of the meeting (ca. 20-25 pp.)? I have some material already, e.g. a 2017 #DeepMapping booklet by Bloom and Sacramento (which is however too long as an intro reading) and some work by and about Denis Wood (which is problematic, as I am afraid that introducing his conviction into class, as necessary, will lead the discussion way astray). I'd appreciate any suggestions.

@gamingthepast I promised an email, but maybe it makes sense to go public with my thinking way before I know what I am talking about. I think I am reflecting on a more meta, possibly, ontological level. That is, rather than having students understand the specificities of historical events/processes, I’d want them to analyse through play the “generalities”. For example, we have been discussing #environing, that is the process through which environments are materially, simbolically, intellectually made. This has led us to very roughly draft a RPG (we only had 90 mins) where the central element is the world-making. Different playing actors have different relationships with the environment, one could say even different #ontologies and their game experience will depend on how these “world views” interact. Think #SmallWorld or #Root but open ended. After reading your latest toot I began to think of this as the Ontological Problem Space 😅 Let’s see where this goes in this year’s session
