Over the past few months, I illustrated 58 information cards and did the graphic design for the new educational mystery game „Das Geheimnis der Soja-Bohne“ aka “The Secret of the Soybean”.

Developed by Dr. Henrike Becker, Dr. Johanna Lochner and ANU the material lets 10–12-year-olds explore how soy production, meat consumption, and environmental change are deeply connected — and how global issues shape our everyday choices. 🌱🔥
Through a narrative introduction, we meet Oskar (Germany), João (Cerrado) and Taíssa (Amazon) and uncover a global web of cause and effect:
• What does a sausage have to do with deforestation?
• Why is the sky burning over Santarém?
• And what responsibility do we carry?

With my illustrations, I want to include south perspectives, avoid stereotypes, and work sensitively with the lived realities of the interviewed children and activists. This was only possible through close collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and their partners in Brazil.

The material is part of the project GloPE – Global Perspectives on Sustainable Diets (GloPE 4), funded by Engagement Global/BMZ, and is free to download via the ANU website www.umweltbildung.de.

Huge thanks to Dr. Henrike Becker, Dr. Johanna Lochner, Annette Dieckmann, Sabrina Abel, Julia Pesch and everyone involved for this thoughtful and inspiring collaboration. ✨

This is both amazing and beautiful: "A trophic cascade is an ecological process that starts at the top of the food chain and tumbles all the way down. A classic examples is when wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park..."

$25M Renovation Transforms Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre

Author(s): Scott Douglas Jacobsen

Publication (Outlet/Website): The Good Men Project

Publication Date (yyyy/mm/dd): 2025/05/23

Representatives of the Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh talk about its $25 million renovation. The upgrades include new HVAC and fire suppression systems, a pumphouse, modernized exhibits, and the transformation of office space into a multipurpose conference centre. New interactive exhibits aim to foster wetland conservation awareness through engaging, age-inclusive experiences. The theatre now supports educational programming, and the restored diorama simulates natural wetland cycles. With 50% improved energy efficiency and full accessibility, the project was funded by the Government of Canada, the Manitoba government, and private donors to support environmental education and sustainability.

Scott Douglas Jacobsen: For the renovation of the Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre, how will the $25 million be spent?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: The renovation of the building included new windows, HVAC system and fire suppression system. The fire suppression required an new pumphouse building to store the water. As well, brand new exhibits were built and renovations were made to the full 55,000 sq foot building (including theatre and cafe). The top floor offices were removed and the space transformed into a multipurpose space for conferences and events.

Jacobsen: How will the new interactive exhibits at the centre enhance environmental education for visitors?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: Our goal is to connect people with wetlands by providing engaging experiences for all ages. We have created a visitor journey so that at the end of the visit there is a call to action. Whether it be to learn more about the importance of wetlands or donate to a wetland conservation organization like Ducks Unlimited Canada

Jacobsen: How has the upgraded theatre improved the wetland conservation?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: The theatre is for educational films as well as conferences and other gatherings. Through this medium, education leads to conservation.

Jacobsen: How does the restored diorama simulate natural wetland conditions?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: Using a combination of lights and sounds, the diorama depicts a full day at the marsh from dust to dawn.

Jacobsen: What amenities does the new event and conference centre offer?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: This second floor space offers views of the marsh, a full service kitchen for onsite catering, spectacular wetland scenery from the deck, full audio visual system, and a bar/flexible food space for lounging.

Jacobsen: Are there specific provisions for events and educators?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: We specialize in providing curriculum-linked programming for students of all ages. There are lesson plans and pre/post activities for educations as well. Special provisions for events include fully accessible facilities. Our new conference centre has a special HVAC system to accommodate smudging.

Jacobsen: How significant is the expected 50% energy efficiency improvements in reaching the centre’s sustainability goals?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: Considering the building was ahead of its time when it first opened in 1993 (green roof, underground cooling system, sewage lagoon system) achieving 50% really exceeded our expectations.

Jacobsen: What role did the Government of Canada and private donors play in supporting the renovation?

Harry J. Enns Wetland Discovery Centre at Oak Hammock Marsh: The Government of Canada made a significant contribution through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) Program as well as Cultural Spaces. The Manitoba government also provided generous funds towards this project as well as several private donors.

Jacobsen: Thank you for the opportunity and your time.

This is one of my favorite spots along the Liesing in Vienna.

I don't know about this section, but most of the Lising was confined in concrete walls not too many years ago, but almost every section in Vienna has been renaturalized by now.

The results:
* fewer floods
* better water quality (Platon doesn't stink after bathing)
* the human psyche benefits from the beauty of nature
* more biodiversity
* great education opportunity (you probably can't see it in the pictures, but just a little bit upstream there is a group of kindergardeners probably learning something about the environment)
* cooler microclimate
* and many, many more

A small stream with reflections and shadows from the surrounding trees. It looks like the scene is in the forest, but its in the city.Vew downstream. Now you can see the treetops and the bits of light they let through.Platon, a black dog, is looking at the scene. His head takes up big parts of the picutre and because he's so dark, the contrast between the reflections and shadows on the water is even higher.In the front of the picture you can see my legs which are dirty, because Platon stood on them with his muddy paws. Now he's in the water getting himself clean.

Koodugal Project Enters Government Schools
We are delighted to share the series of the significant milestone in Koodugal journey towards environmental stewardship.
Our goal was clear to extend our conservation initiative to reach government school students, thereby fostering awareness and action among the wider student community.
Through this collaborative effort, we were able to:
• Conduct engaging awareness sessions on sparrow conservation and the importance of biodiversity.
• Provide hands-on nest box fabrication workshops, enabling students to actively participate in habitat restoration.
• Deliver nest boxes for installation in and around school campuses to encourage the return of sparrows.
• Inspire eco-conscious behavior and reconnect children with nature through experiential learning.
This pilot implementation marks a transformational step in our conservation mission, proving that institutional collaborations can create lasting impact. The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the government school students have reaffirmed our belief that environmental education must be inclusive and accessible to all.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Tamil Nadu School Education Department for their trust and support, and to the teachers and staff of the participating schools for their active involvement.koodugal providing hands-on training to students to build their own sparrow nest boxes offers a powerful blend of learning and impact. It enhances teamwork as students collaborate on planning and assembling, while improving concentration and attention to detail through careful handling of basic tools. The activity fosters creativity and a sense of ownership, as students take home a product they personally crafted. More importantly, it builds environmental awareness by connecting them directly with the needs of urban birds like sparrows. This experiential approach not only strengthens practical and life skills but also nurtures empathy, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of nature conservation.
