[this paper is WAY over my head in terms of the nuance of structural geology, but still fascinating; further, I have to say: these are TRULY gorgeous, well-designed & presented, and useful geologic maps, cross-sections, annotated photographs and other visualisations (I am jealous of that level of skill, in the BEST of ways!)]

There was no way that one could have confidence that conditions the next time might not produce #erosion three times more severe than the time before. Officials fooled themselves into thinking they had such understanding and confidence, in spite of the peculiar variations from case to case. A mathematical model was made to calculate erosion. This was a model based not on physical understanding but on empirical curve fitting en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Richard_

🇮🇸 🌊 Reynisfjara Beach

In Reynisfjörður, landslides occurred in which a large section of the shore slid down to the warning signs on the beach. According to a coastal engineer, an east wind was the cause. He explains where the unusual east wind came from.

Whether the appearance of the beach will continue to change is currently difficult to predict.

The rise in sea levels plays no role in this.

Unusual easterly winds cause landslide in Reynisfjörður

A coastal engineer says the landslide that has occurred in Reynisfjörður was caused by an unusually strong easterly wind. A large bank collapsed from the slopes of Reynisfjörður, right up to the warning signs by the beach.

"The explanation for this is that there are persistent easterly winds that have been present all winter. Often heavy with very high waves. And it is the easterly winds that carry sand along the south coast to the west," says Sigurður Sigurðarson, a coastal engineer at the Icelandic Road Administration.

"Usually the prevailing winds are southwesterly, which carries the sand eastward. But this winter it has been different and easterly winds have been prevailing. Which is unusual."

Sea level rise has no role in this.

"I think that's completely true. In fact, the opposite has happened in many places on the south coast, because the land there has been rising because the glaciers are retreating. So in many places there has been an actual decrease in sea level rather than a rise.""Haven't seen anything like this before in this area"
Sigurður has been studying the country's southern coast for a long time and says he has never seen such drastic changes in the appearance of the coast before.

"There are areas along the coast where there have been significant changes, in other places less so. But we have not seen anything like this before in this area," says Sigurður, and continues:

"The thing is that Reynisfjall juts out far into the sea, so when sand is moving west from the southeasterly wind, it stops at Reynisfjall. So the beach at Reynisfjörður doesn't get sand from the east, which is why this is so obvious in this area."

Fifty years ago, the shore was about 500 meters further, and then sand could easily have moved west of Reynisfjall.

Sigurður says it is impossible to say whether the appearance of the beach will change further.

"It all depends on the direction of the waves created by the wind direction. So recently this fall and winter, the low-pressure systems have crossed the Atlantic quite a bit to the south of us. And now there have been reports that there have been major conflicts, both in the British Isles and on the Iberian Peninsula. So these are low-pressure systems that go quite a bit to the south of us and they create this easterly wind for us. Now there may be little left of the winter so we don't know how this will turn out."

Reynisfjara Beach 🇮🇸 has often been featured in the media because of its beauty and danger – unfortunately, the sea claims victims there due to its unpredictability.

Now strong east winds have washed away a large section of the shore from the slopes of Reynisfjörður up to the warning signs.

Unusually large landslide in Reynisfjörður: "This is the biggest we've ever seen"

There has been considerable erosion in Reynisfjörður in recent days. A large bank collapsed from the slopes of Reynisfjörður right up to the warning signs by the shore.

Reporter Alma Ómarsdóttir was in Reynisfjörður with cameraman Guðmundur Bergkvist. She says that although they had seen photographs of the beach before they arrived, they were shocked to see how much erosion had occurred.

Farmer and landowner Guðni Einarsson was born and raised in the area and says he has never seen a comparable landslide before. "No, this is by far the worst we have ever seen," he says, adding that there is no record of such a thing, especially in such a short period of time."We have often witnessed the sand moving back and forth between Dyrhólaeyjar and Reynisfjall," he says.

He suspects that most of the sand that the sea has taken has returned west to Dyrhólaeyjar. What is special, however, is that the sea has rolled over large bluestone boulders and carried them west along the shore.

"There are huge piles of big rocks, he's been digging up the west side of it," he says.

Thinks the beach will return to the same state
The mountain is still being excavated as easterly winds have been blowing across the area for many weeks. Guðni says that in such a wind direction, a lot of sand is being moved westward.

"We need to get a westerly wind for a few weeks and then hopefully the sand will come back," says Guðni, who doesn't expect the rocks to come back. He does, however, believe that the beach will likely return to its original state over time.

He says there is little that can be done to stop the sea and if the easterly wind continues, it could start moving further inland.

"We have a hard time dealing with the Atlantic Ocean, especially here. It's very deep here and the waves come ashore unbroken and are extremely powerful, there's nothing we can do about it," he says.
