Episode 120-Selecting Textbook...

Yesterday I posted for the start of #PrideMonth, and it wasn't a hugely celebratory post. Although saying that, I did end it by saying that the Queer community is resilient.

On a more positive note, it's another good opportunity to remind all #ELT and #ESOL practitioners about my free guide to representing #LGBTQIA identities in materials and the classroom.

I updated it earlier this year – and yes, it's still free.

I've spent enough time tutoring English as a Second Language (#ESOL) over the years that I dreamt I was teaching someone how to use the colloquialism "come on!" And, awake, I'm still pretty impressed with my answer!

"It means to stop whatever else you're doing and align with me. So when your bag bursts and someone shouts 'oh, come on!', they're asking the universe to stop maligning them and help them instead."

Recently, I've taken it upon myself to try to influence the English language teaching industry to take a stand to represent and support the #LGBTQIA community.

I started an open letter, and gathered over 300 signatures from those within the industry, to try to urge organisations to take a stand.

I then emailed nine organisations at the beginning of April – to which I received one reply (the one that I thought would reply, as they do a lot of work on socials in support of the community).

One of my friends and colleagues nudged another organisation called NATECLA, and today they responded publicly.

Change starts from within.

#EnglishLanguageTeaching #ELT #ESOL #RepresentationMatters #IAmNotATaboo

(Alt description was too long: here's the end of it:

We are more than happy to sign this open letter. We’d also encourage our members and others who work within the sector (and Adult Education more generally) to do so.)

Screenshot from NATECLA website:
NATECLA: Supporting our LGBTQIA+ colleagues and learners.

NATECLA has always championed inclusive ESOL and Community Languages provision, and especially the need for teaching, learning and assessment materials that reflect learners’ diverse realities whilst offering insights into differing life experiences and perspectives.

We applaud this challenge from Peter J Fullagar, LGBTQIA+ champion in the English Language Teaching sector to publishers, awarding organisations, institutions and all who work within ESOL and the wider arena of our sector to reflect on how LGBTQIA+ peoples are represented and reflected in materials and classroom discourses. Peter rightly points out that the sector is all too often complicit in upholding prejudice, discrimination and misinformation about LGBTQIA+ people and identities, as well as perpetuating falsehoods that these are β€˜not normal’, β€˜invalid or β€˜taboo’.

Given the recent fallout from the UK Supreme Court judgement and interim guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) for England, Scotland and Wales (and since it’s Trans+ History Week from 5-11 May), we’d particularly emphasise the importance of ensuring trans, non-binary and gender diverse ESOL learners and practitioners are welcomed, affirmed, accepted, included and treated with dignity.

This week is #TransHistoryWeek, and it's more important than ever to celebrate the vast contributions the Trans and Non-binary community have made to society.

In an ever-increasingly hostile society towards Trans and Non-binary people (just you wait – those doing the targeting will definitely come for the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community), I wholeheartedly support the Trans and Non-binary communities.

Because I believe that our (LGBTQIA+) existence should be represented in education, I've generated a coupon code to get one of my newest resources, Under the Scope, for free.

Written to coincide with LGBTQ+ History Month 2024, this ELT resource looks at trends in LGBTQIA+ mental health and being yourself, focusing on Dr Ewan Forbes.

All you need to do is add the resource to your cart, and add the coupon code THW2025

Got accepted for a program to credential high school teachers to teach college classes (#Ohio's #CollegeCreditPlus program). Doing the paperwork stuff now - so much fun.

I'm an #ESOL teacher. I'll be taking classes to get credentialed to teach college-level #CyberSecurity. Have to take 4 or 5 graduate-level classes. Might have to do a pre-req or two.

Luckily, I've been listening to #TWiT and #SecurityNow for over 10 years at this point (maybe closer to 15?), so I feel pretty well prepared.

YOU!

Yes, you!
Have you signed, verified and shared the open letter to the ELT industry on representation of LGBTQIA+ identities?

The numbers are now just over 300 signatures, with fewer verified.
If you believe that LGBTQIA+ identities deserve to represented in ELT materials, then please do sign, verify and share.

If you have already signed, please do share – around 300 signatures will have a much wider network than just me on my own.

OK, exciting news …

My LGBTQIA+ English language resource book is going to be stocked by an English language bookshop here in the UK.

It’s a self-published book, with eight lessons inclusive of LGBTQIA+ identities.

As far as I know, it’s the only such resource book in ELT in Existence. And it’s called Existence.

ELT is not representative of all identities.

LGBTQIA+ identities are human identities, along with race, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, Global South, and more, many of which intersect.

Without allies and people coming together to collectively speak up, there will be no change. Individuals working on their own may make a big noise, but are very unlikely to make an impact when it comes to inclusion.

The open letter is just one way to show solidarity, so here's what you can do:
- sign the letter (and don't forget to verify your email)
- share the letter, particularly in ELT/ESOL/EFL circles and groups (I'm no longer on Facebook or Instagram, so can't share there directly)
- if you have a newsletter, or mailing list, I'd be most grateful if you'd share the link there
- if you'd like me (Peter) to write something for a blog, a newsletter or an online (or print) publication, get in contact at admin@iamnotataboo.com

It's still #LGBTQPlusHistoryMonth, and I thought I'd share a little carousel about the work I've been doing over the last couple of years.

Yellow background with text saying Have you ever asked yourself how do I represent LGBTQIA+ identities? It's not always an easy question to answer. Bottom left has logo of Peter, with initials PJF and a rainbow umbrella, along with web address www.peterjfullagar.co.ukBlue background with text saying Representing LGBTQIA+ identities in ELT materials requires listening to community voices. 1 One starting point. The FREE LGBTQIA+ identities in ELT guide covers ideas for representation in language skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), along with grammar and vocabulary as well as some common ELT topics. The guide also includes an adapted glossary (from Stonewall), with screenshot of front cover of the guide. 2 Explore free materials. Various free lesson materials are available, such as Who are you? (A2); an introductory resource lightly exploring identity within the LGBTQIA+ community. This resource mainly looks at they/them pronouns for some non-binary people, with screenshot of front cover of Who are you?3 Explore paid resources. The Existence collection contains eight LGBTQIA+ inclusive ELT lesson resources, ranging from A2 to C1, with teacher notes and answers. Available as pdf download or physical book (UK or Amazon), with screenshot of front cover of Existence. 4 Don't just take my word for it! .. the existence of β€˜Existence’ is in itself an invaluable contribution to ELT materials since, for a change, it makes LGBTQIA+ people–in all their colours, shapes, sizes, abilities, origins, economic situations– visible and, therefore, conceived of as worthy in the eyes of others and in their own. (Vanesa Polastri)5 Still don't take my word for it! Image of review from student saying Today in my English lesson, we did the family unit of the book Existence. I really liked this book because the author has a really special mindset and talks freely about things or statements which other people consider taboo. Also, in a lot of parts of the this unit we can see a variety of cultures, types of family or even names, which with this small detail all people can feel a part of the book. This book talks about all people and not only about what the society thinks is normal.

Thank you to those who have seen, signed and shared the open letter to the ELT industry. There are now 170 signatures with 9 without verification.

For me, it's vitally important that the LGBTQIA+ ELT community come together along with our allies in the industry to show that representation matters.
Have you signed and shared yet?
