The #European Commission was said not to be planning any action to block the #UK Government’s move to deregulate London’s buses. Robert Coleman, the EC Commission’s Director General for Transport, made this clear during the 1992 LT Guest Lecture. When asked whether rising congestion and pollution in #Europe might prompt Brussels to intervene, he noted that there was no political will to create a common policy for regular bus services and that matters such as traffic management were best handled locally. He added that the Commission would not direct member states on where to build major interchanges unless locations risked inconveniencing most inter-state passengers. LT’s interests in #Brussels were represented by John Fawkner of the UITP, whose work involved issues such as a proposed EC directive on working hours, VAT on fares, and standardisation affecting choices on rolling stock and signalling.
