The joke here is that despite PiS being in charge of Poland for 8 years, they were unable (not that they didn't try) to breach the heavenly firewall of Polish academia and politicise public funding for research. @benstanley.eu He even got his grants for harping on PiS from taxpayers' money.

Of course, a lot of bad things happened in the research world under PiS - the applied sciences granting authority was taken over by a bunch of political goons who used it to line their pockets, and pro-govt research got showered with money.

But the humanities/social sciences grant agency managed to hold its ground, and nobody dared to touch EU funding, knowing well that Berlaymont would grab a very big stick if anybody tried to manipulate Horizon or other R&D funding.
