Radio WORM and XPUB invite you to A_Mazing_Machine[s] : Wordscapes To Liberate Language, an evening of compositional experimentation at WORM UBIK on Wednesday 19 November 3:30-8pm.

For the past two months, first-year students from the Piet Zwart Institute's Experimental Publishing Master (XPUB) have been building writing machines—deconstructing, reassembling, and subverting original inputs.

As well as documenting their explorations on their weekly Radio WORM show (Mondays 10:00-11:00), they now invite you to witness their growing collection of ‘machines’ in person: drop by to discover cut-ups and scripts, roam through automated writing and audio assemblages, and witness experiments moving past the everyday use of language.

Tomorrow (Thursday, 21 August) I’ll join a panel at the Tallinna Kunstihoone for the catalogue launch of the Tallinna Graafikatriennaal / Tallinn Print Trienniali in Tallin (Estonia) together with Marika Agu , Tõnis Jürgens and Brigita Reinert. Indeed, in the catalogue there are among the others two texts of mines: Trükitud versus elektrooniline (Print vs. Electrons) and Lõputu kirjastamise paradigma: ruum, aeg ja mälu (The Endless Publishing Paradigm: Space, Time, and Memory) for the very first time translated into Estonian, which is of course a huge honour!

Yesterday, our Experimental Publishing reading group took as one of its chosen texts Tara McPherson’s ‘Scaling Vectors: Thoughts on the Future of Scholarly Communication’, which appeared in the Journal of Electronic Publishing in 2010.

It has lines such as: ‘While innovative publishing efforts have emerged from a variety of spaces … it is safe to say that change has not broadly swept through the humanities.’

And: ‘The impulse to conserve the status quo emerges largely from humanities scholars themselves. Faced with a variety of threats (both real and perceived) to the humanities, scholars tend to hold on to established modes of working.’

All raises the question, has much changed in the 15 years since these words were written? And if not, why not? Does anyone have any ideas?
