Did a nice remote access hike in Northwest BC on the weekend. 8km each way. #hiking #ExploreBC #FujiX100VI #BackCountry #GetOutside #mountains #waterfall

A waterfall, front and centre. It falls into a rocky faced valley. The top of the falls are lined with evergreen trees and there are mountains in the distance.Three hikers walking along a the top of a mountain bow. It is an alpine meadow with a blue sky above. The hikers are in a nice ray of sunshine.A stitched panorama from the top of an alpine meadow looking out toward more mountains, meadows, and the valley to the trail below. The mountains are snow capped and the sky is blue with a few clouds.

Great Blue Heron are everywhere. You would think being large and blue they wouldn't really be cut out for the spy life, But, I can assure you, there is one watching you right now.

The hummingbird's vertical pupils and long, piercing beak tell us that this animal is an ambush predator

There are people who will tell you that gulls are easy to identify. They are lying. For those of us who live in BC, we very rarely get any gulls with black heads aside from these guys. So, at least a couple of times a year I get to cast my eyes upon the water and say "Ahh a Bonaparte's" without checking my spreadsheet or demanding that it show me the colour of it's legs.

It's hard to look elegant with long, bright yellow legs and a beak 1 1/2 times longer than your head, but Greater Yellow Legs manage to pull it off.

This is a Golden-crowned Kinglet. You would think that being royalty, it would be too dignified to play with photographers. But there's nothing these little bastards like better than to hop down onto a branch directly in front of you, flash you a winning smile, and then zip off one millisecond before you take the shot.

We don't get a lot of snow geese in the Lower Mainland, But I did once see a large flock of them fly in and it did indeed look like a snowstorm.

Taking a break from Geese to share a picture I took yesterday of some adorable Bushtits. They are so small and hyperactive, and seemingly immune to the effects of gravity that I'm always thrilled when I get a clear shot of them.

Once again, I offer proof that the Canada Goose is not just a loud, thuggish poop machine. When was the last time you saw two parents and four teenagers out for a family stroll and everyone was getting along? And they might not even all be theirs! They actually babysit for each other.

I spent a day on a little lake in Northern BC. Lots of birds were around. I hope to go back when the loons are out and about with their chicks. #waterfowl #birds #wildlife #canonR5 #WildlifePhotography #ExploreBC #CommonLoon #RedWingedBlackBird #Osprey

I have a degree in public relations that I have done absolutely nothing with. I think It's time to put it to use by raising the profile of the much maligned Canada Goose. First of all they are amazing parents. Look at this little gosling, have you ever seen anyone look more cozy, safe and loved?

If you ever see a Canada Goose that looks smaller than usual and well, kind of cute, then chances are what you're looking at is a Cackling Goose.

There is a bird called a Surf bird, but it's this bird - the Cedar Waxwing who should have that name. Sure, the Surf Bird hangs out at the ocean, but have you ever seen a bird who would look more at home with a surfboard tucked under its wing than this one?

This little fly catcher is a Western Wood Pewee. Sure, they are cute, but the real reason to like them is they eat mosquitos!

My second favorite finch is the Purple Finch. They aren't actually purple (there was a lot of whiskey served at those bird naming committee meetings) but look at that gorgeous colour!

Of all the finches that have hung around with, my favorite is the plain old House Finch. All the other finches look kind of grumpy. Even Goldfinches look like they're itching for a fight, which is pretty hard to pull off when you're bright yellow and weigh less than a plum. But House Finches always look like they're remembering something wonderful.

I had been waiting in the rain for an hour to get a picture of a White-winged Dove who was alleged to be hanging out in the area. I did eventually get my shot, but what I remember most of that day is this beautiful little goldfinch posing so beautifully right in front of me.
