The Americans by Saul Steinberg.

Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) was an American artist born in Romania. For more than 60 years, he created drawings and covers for The New Yorker magazine. In 1958, he was commissioned by the American government to create a work of art for the American pavilion at the World‘s Fair in Brussels (Expo 58). A futuristic circular building on the Heysel Plateau (in Laeken, in the north-west of the City of Brussels), which we still know today as the American Theatre (‘Amerikaans Theater’ in Dutch, because it was used for a long time for the studios of the Flemish public radio and television broadcaster, now VRT).

‘The Americans’ is a wall fresco in eight parts, measuring over 70 metres in length, inspired by the ‘American way of life’.

In the spring of 2025, three of the eight panels were used as a backdrop for a press presentation by the Belgian luxury leather goods store Maison Delvaux. Maison Delvaux also supported the restoration of these three panels, as well as the five others, so that the work can be preserved and rediscovered in all its glory.

The giant work was rarely shown because of its volume and fragility. But now, three panels of Saul Steinberg’s work are on display until 19 October 2025 on the first floor of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in a temporary exhibition space (admission included in a ticket to the permanent exhibition).

(1) Signage in the museum directing visitors to the section where Saul Steinberg’s three panels of ‘The Americans’ are on display.

(2) Detail from the panel ‘Main Street - Small Town’. Acquired in 1958. Inv. 7408.

(3) Detail from the panel ‘Downtown - Big City’. Acquired in 1958. Inv. 7409.

(4) Detail from the panel ‘Cocktail Party’. Acquired in 1958. Inv. 7413.

A white sign is on a light grey wall next to a dark brown handrail. The sign has black text and a black arrow pointing up and to the left. It lists different rooms or exhibitions in a museum. The list says: “old masters,” “dutch school,” “spillaert,” “be.paper,” “steinberg,” and “room 54.” Under “room 54,” it says “recent acquisitions” in smaller letters. The wall is clean and simple, and there is natural light on the left side. The photo feels calm and clear, helping visitors know where to go in the museum. This is an artwork with simple, abstract figures on a white background. In the front, there are two brown cardboard faces. On the left, a man with a hat and glasses looks to the right. On the right, a woman with white hair and red lips looks forward. Behind them is a black and white drawing of a street with a grid pattern. There are four black figures walking on the street, and a black car is on the right. The drawing style is rough and sketchy, with strong lines and simple shapes. The scene feels busy and urban, showing people, a car, and buildings in the city. This is an artwork with simple line drawings on a light background. On the left, there is a big bridge with tall towers and cables, drawn with thin black lines. Below the bridge are buildings with round and triangle-shaped roofs. On the right side, there are tall buildings drawn with small black windows, and two brown cardboard cut-outs of women’s profiles are attached to the buildings. The women have long hair and face left. The scene looks like a city with a bridge, skyscrapers, and people, using a mix of cardboard and pen drawing in a modern, abstract style. This is an artwork with a dark blue and black background. On the left, there is a light pink face in profile with red lips, blowing out white smoke with black lines. The smoke has swirls and words written in cursive black letters. On the right, there is a figure made with brown cardboard, wearing red glasses and gold earrings, with white hair and red lips. The figure’s body is long and has many black words written on it. The artwork feels busy and creative, mixing drawing, handwriting, and cardboard to show two people in conversation, with words floating in the air like smoke.

A great view from Brussel's Atomium, showing the wide and beautiful landscape while delivering the proof what a masterpiece this construction was when being built for the Expo in 1958!

This image depicts a unique aerial view of the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium. The Atomium is a landmark building constructed for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair (Expo 58). It’s made up of several spheres connected to form the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified billions of times. The structures in the background include part of the Brussels Expo exhibition halls, characterized by their large, expansive flat roofs and surrounded by parking areas and green spaces. The image captures the distinctive architecture and symmetry of the site, as well as the urban layout surrounding it.

"Marche de l'atomium" - Grande Harmonie De Bruxelles

The theme to Expo '58, a grand exposition in Brussels to mark International Geophysical Year.

The Expo's enduring symbol is the Atomium, a giant structure of an iron crystal. It also gave us Lucien de Roeck's star, which I use as an icon almost everywhere.

@sternecker I didn’t know about #KennethAnger until thursday. I was in #Brussels when I accidentally connected some dots of the stories I know of my father, who had a very late #comingOut. He worked at #Expo58 in Brussels as a young man and his favorite music was the #glagoliticMass, which must have seemed very exotic and foreign back then.
It became one of my favorites, too.
I’d love to find and talk to other people who were there but only few would still be alive today.

So this tunnel in the #Atomium looks like the reason why companies warn of video-games, pleading for a rest after 15 minutes of playing! Anyway, a weird view to get away from it all once you are focused on the flashing colors 😳 !
