It always surprises me how much open water you can find, even in the middle of -30°C temperatures. Somehow, these small streams stay open for long periods, even in extreme cold. For us hikers, they always present a challenge, as crossing them over snow bridges or even ice is always an unknown danger.

On the border of Finland and Norway in the eastern Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area in February 2024, during a two-week solo winter hike. This was a tough hike, with temperatures dropping below -35°C, accompanied by slight winds that led to my first-ever frostbite.

Dangerous cold to make a strong comeback in central, eastern US this week

#Arctic air is on the move southward and eastward into the United States in the coming days and will create harsh conditions for millions prior to the end of February.

Our cold snap has passed, with coldest temperatures reaching -20C/-5F, and now high temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for at least the next two weeks. (Indeed, we are forecast to see 10C/50F on Friday.)

So the newspaper-and-black-plastic protective covering has come off the Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). The plants appear to have survived the cold, but time will tell. If there is damage, the leaves will turn yellow then brown, indicating the stem has died in that part of the plant. But I hope the plants suffer no ill effects at all from the extreme cold of early last week.

Having an #EV in the #ExtremeCold is not as scary as it sounds. Sure the battery gets a nice smack on the bum, but honestly I was surprised it held its own against -20 C.

Though now strongly considering an EV charger at home.

And so I have covered the Japanese false holly plants with crumpled newspaper and black plastic garbage bags, weighted down with stones, in the hope that keeping the plants covered and protected from any wind will allow the temperatures surrounding the plants to remain warm enough to prevent any damage.

From the experience of similarly cold temperatures around Christmas two years ago, I am fearful for my Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). Two years ago, much of its foliage and stems were killed by these temperatures. The plants have grown back, though with a lower habit than before.

The forecast temperatures for central Ohio from Sunday 19 January through Wednesday 22 January 2025 show a range from -4C Sunday morning falling to -17C early Monday and remaining below -10C through early Wednesday.
