Here, a Redwood National and State Parks scene from the coast. This is a piece of driftwood, with sinuous lines (some containing sand), dried and bleached by sunlight. The photo is from late morning a few days ago. Primary colors are greys, whites, and blacks, with a bit of tan, brown, and gold here and there. The wavy pattern of the wood is always a delight to encounter while out doing beach cleanup!

Here is a fairly common scene in the redwood forest - a redwood root with a fallen spray of needles (lower left) and green colors of mosses (or lichens or ? not sure) along with the more reddish colors of the exposed root (center right). This photo is from Wednesday morning, with a bit of sun making its way through the canopy and a bit of moisture to help bring out the colors. For scale, this is approximately seven or eight inches wide. The wave pattern extends throughout the length of the root.

Well, I thought that I had shared the last of this fall’s Sierra Nevada aspen photographs. But then I took another look at my raw files and decided that a few more were worth working up. This is one of a set of four in that group. It features one of the steep canyons that rise along the eastern escarpment of the Sierra. A single heart-shaped leaf floats alone on a dark, glassy surface, its yellow surface warmed by subtle veins that fan from the short pale stem to the scalloped edges. Tiny brown flecks and the faint translucence of the lamina give it a fragile, slightly weathered look, as if it has just separated from the tree and is taking a quiet moment to rest.
