A quotation from Samuel Johnson

That familiarity produces neglect, has been long observed. The effect of all external objects, however great or splendid, ceases with their novelty; the courtier stands without emotion in the royal presence; the rustick tramples under his foot the beauties of the spring with little attention to their colours or their fragrance; and the inhabitant of the coast darts his eye upon the immense diffusion of waters, without awe, wonder, or terrour.

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English writer, lexicographer, critic
Essay (1753-06-26), The Adventurer, No. 67

Passion is overrated.

What you love is often just what you're familiar with.

You love your favorite subject not because it sparked some magical interest—but because you've spent more time with it. You know its layers, patterns, and rhythm.

Familiarity builds love.

What you need isn’t passion—it’s exposure, repetition, and learning.

If you want to love something deeply, master it.

Good morning. ☕🍵🐶

6 May 2025

So here we are—morning has arrived, and there’s coffee. I woke up late, nearly seven-thirty, a rare occurrence since I hardly ever sleep past six, if that long. Hmmm… I had hoped those first few sentences would spark something, but nothing seems to come to mind. Charlie is here. At first, I thought he wanted to go outside, but instead, he curled up next to my chair—an all-too-familiar sight. It’s funny how these small moments and daily habits shape our lives in ways we often overlook. Perhaps it’s the rhythm of life that matters most—the quiet consistency of morning coffee, the presence of loved ones, and, of course, our loyal, furry companions, who are both. Familiarity, after all, is the comfort food of existence.

"Familiarity reduces the greatness of things." – Seneca the Younger

Reflections of Autumn

"This image captures a peaceful lakeside scene with striking reflections of autumn-colored trees in the water. The foliage displays a rich blend of green, yellow, and red hues, creating a vibrant natural mirror effect. A few birds glide across the lake, adding a sense of serenity to the moment. The composition is tranquil and visually stunning, evoking the calm beauty of nature. The image is signed "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom left corner." Copilot

Studying how people can study in an efficient way under lab conditions, it has been found that on the one hand it is important that connections can be made to familiar information. On the other hand, it can help learning when it is done in an unfamiliar environment, or a familiar environment with unfamiliar elements. A quotation from Stevenson

Gratitude without familiarity, gratitude otherwise than as a nameless element in a friendship, is a thing so near to hatred that I do not care to split the difference. Until I find a man who is pleased to receive obligations, I shall continue to question the tact of those who are eager to confer them.

A quotation from Montaigne

Men have seemed miraculous to the world, in whom their wives and valets have never seen anything even worth noticing. Few men have been admired by their own households.

A quotation from Addison, Joseph:

«
Admiration is a very short-lived passion, that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object, unless it be still fed with fresh discoveries, and kept alive by a new perpetual succession of miracles rising up to its view.

In tonight’s tutorial, we talked about how psychology makes sense of emotions like love. Is it all subjective? Maybe not as much as you think. Love can be studied scientifically—not just through brain scans showing neurotransmitters like dopamine and oxytocin but also through observable behaviours.

Take reciprocity: when someone likes us, we’re more likely to like them back. Or similarity: shared values, interests, and beliefs often strengthen attraction. Add proximity and familiarity—the magic of repeated exposure—and you start seeing how relationships form. Then there’s complementarity: where differences between people don’t divide but balance and enhance connection.

What fascinates me is how psychology bridges the personal and the universal. Yes, love feels deeply subjective, but studies show patterns we can test and measure—observing behaviours, tracking emotional responses, and using physiological data to explore what we feel.

Have you noticed these dynamics in your relationships? #Psychology #Love #Relationships #Emotions #Reciprocity #Similarity #Proximity #Familiarity #Complementarity

A quotation from Nietzsche:

«
Gradually we become tired of the old, of what we safely possess, and we stretch out our hands again. Even the most beautiful scenery is no longer assured of our love after we have lived in it for three months, and some more distant coast attracts our avarice: possessions are generally diminished by possession.

A quotation from Wilcox, Ella Wheeler:

«
The choicest garb, the sweetest grace,
Are oft to strangers shown;
The careless mien, the frowning face,
Are given to our own.
We flatter those we scarcely know,
We please the fleeting guest,
And deal full many a thoughtless blow
To those who love us best.
