OpenBSD users, can you tell me your experience of full-disk encryption on a SSD?
Is the encryption overhead noticiable compared to plain SSD? Or is it as slow as HDD?
How often have you lost files due to a poweroff letting your partition on an inconsistent state?
#SteamDeck folks ... who has switched from #steamos to something like #bazzite so you can enable full disk encryption #fde ??
I cannot use this as a laptop replacement without #encryption and it doesn't seem to be a priority for Valve.
I was thinking of buying a new-to-me #Thinkpad next month, but I think what I'll do instead is try to spruce up my #PinebookPro:
- Get new rubber feet
- Get a bigger SSD
- Install #pmOS and finally have #FDE on the thing
- Put some proper locktite on the screws so it's not falling apart all the time
I need to look up some videos on applying threadlocker to screws. It's much looser stuff than the typical locktite and it tends to make a mess.
I'm debating just dribbling locktite (regular CA) on top of the screws as well to try to make them a little more permanent. Not a great solution, but the thing just loves to fall apart.

Just look at #grub taking 10+ years to adapt to the #argon2i key derivation standard (still not implemented) making #FDE with #LVM on #LUKS still ‘hard to do’. so yeah…
Thinking of trying #postmarketOS on my #PinebookPro.
I didn't even know you could run it as a desktop OS.
Supposedly the installer supports #FullDiskEncryption, which is... "poggers," I think the kids say.

Continued adventures with #fedora on my #framework laptop...
Losing a LOT of battery capacity overnight ... like 50% plus. Suggests that something isn't right and, as a MacBook owner it's shocking. I think I charge my MacBook maybe once a week? Sometimes less.
Also, resume from sleep / standby is never guaranteed... occasionally it will, more often it won't.
I've had a look through the logs but it appears that the sleep works just fine, then it moves to suspend ... and then there's no logging. Nothing on wake at all.
This, with a few other things, are making me wonder if it's not unlocking the #FDE on wake?
So, I've now wiped the install and removed full disk encryption to see if the behaviour improves.
This is my third OS install in as many days.
Vraiment je ne comprends pas les nouveaux programmes du cycle 1. Je suis bien embêtée pour faire de la formation.
Doit-on comprendre qu'on n'enseigne plus que le français et les maths à l'école maternelle ?
Ou alors doit-on les voir comme une réécriture de certaines parties seulement de l'ancien BO et on garde le reste ? (Ce qui ne serait pas réglementaire mais qui semble être le plus raisonnable)
Mais je n'ose croire que ça a été fait dans la précipitation par des gens qui ne connaissent pas la maternelle.

The workflow I really want is something like:
- Use full disk encryption (#FDE) via #LUKS
- Only *require* a password to decrypt the disk from an encrypted data-at-rest state (i.e. boot)
- Once decrypted, prefer using fingerprint unlock (retaining the password option for convenience & necessary for remote access).
- Login should decrypt the keyring regardless of auth method.
Then maybe have a panic/lockdown mode like Android/iOS that sends the device back into the encrypted-at-rest state.
Quand je fais le puzzle de Brousseau avec mes M1 et que les 3/4 des étudiant·e·s ont un raisonnement additif, je me dis qu'au moins je vais être vraiment utile et que ça valait le coût de leur faire faire la situation réelle avec le retour du milieu.
